Hi guys, I'm new to scooters and am trying to troubleshoot my gf's GY6. It has been sitting for about 2 years but worked before that time. There has always been an issue with it though where it would sometimes die while riding. She told me every so often she'd replace the battery and then it'll work fine again. This makes me think it's just an electrical issue, but then again it could be a number of things.
I want to eventually take the carb apart and clean it, but I wanted see what else I can do before that.
Things that work:
Headlight, brake light, starter motor, fuel pump
Things that I have done/tested so far:
-Engine turns over
-Replaced fuel filter
-Replaced spark plug
-Air filter doesn't seem dirty
-Vacuum activates the fuel pump
-Battery seems to charge but doesn't seem to hold for too long, new battery coming in the mail
-Stator voltage, seems ok
-CDI voltage, seems ok
-Coil continuity between 2 prongs, seems ok
-Coil continuity between prongs and plug socket, seems ok
-Spark plug in the socket, test touching engine case while cranking, no spark
I still need to test the handlebar kill switch. Something I need clarification on... can the starter crank even when the kill switch is in the off position? Seems like I can activate the starter in either position, maybe that means the switch is bad? Thanks all!

Some scooters has a kill switch om the side stand. If the side stand is out it could kill the spark.
Have you checked it?

Some scooters has a kill switch om the side stand. If the side stand is out it could kill the spark. Have you checked it? Yep, I've taken a look at both side stand and handlebar kill switches. They seem to be fine when testing continuity and flipping them on/off. Side question... it looks like it completes the circuit while the stand is down, does that mean it's creating a short so that the CDI doesn't get voltage? Here is a good video to test for no SPARK: Alleyoop I've seen several troubleshooting videos but haven't seen this one yet. I'll take a look tonight. Thanks! |

Also something I discovered a couple days ago while doing another voltage test on the stator, looks like the trigger might be the culprit. Doesn't seem to be giving me any reading this time around. I'll try it again tonight to make sure I'm not seeing things!

Might be the cdi ir the stator. Yeah I'm starting to think it's the stator... I got a new CDI and plugged in with same results. I did some more readings from following the video in previous post. I still need to complete the chart, but can some one take a look and let me know if anything is off? The only thing out of range is the resistance reading on the stator power wire (in red). FINALLY! I HAVE SPARK!
I'm not exactly sure what I did to get it to work, just tinkered with the wires. I switched the green ground wire on the CDI harness as mentioned above and gave it a try. Nothing. Then switched it back and it worked! Maybe the ground wire wasn't making good contact on the CDI unit and that might have helped reseat it into the pin.
Next on my list... try the propane trick in the video, since the engine still isn't starting. I'm not sure if fuel is the problem or if the spark isn't working inside the engine.
Hope this process so far is helpful to you guys.

Propane trick works! I was able to start the engine for about 2 seconds before it would die. I think there is some blockage in the carburetor and is not taking in fuel. I think the fuel pump works because I see fuel trickling into the fuel filter, but I think that's where it stops.
If I take the carbs apart, will I be able to determine if the fuel pump is good or bad? Or what kind of test can I do for that?

take the bottom of the carb and remove the jets and clean them with carb cleaner or brake cleaner and also spray it into the holes where the jets came from in the carb. also remove and clean float and float needle and spray cleaner through that hole in carb as well hope it works for you it sounds like the carb just needs a good cleaning from sitting

I have taken the carb completely apart and sprayed every single port with carb cleaner. Everything actually looked pretty clean to begin with but I went over it a couple of times just to be sure. Gaskets seem ok and float has no cracks. Fuel gets into the bowl when cranking. Idle screw is set to 1.5 turns loose as recommended. The only thing I noticed that looked out of place was the pilot jet looked pretty clogged. I was able to get a very thin wire through it and can see a tiny tiny hole when held up to the light. It looks a little smaller than it should be. How small should this hole be? I got a torch tip cleaner and couldn't even stick the thinest probe through... is it supposed to go through? Anyway, the scooter still isn't starting and I think the pilot jet is the reason why. I haven't tested the electronic choke yet but I can't think of anything else that I can be overlooking? |

Check your wires, I had a similar problem on my GY6, one of the wires attached to the CDI was making bad contact. Wires are cheap, replace them to avoid future problems.

I seem to be getting spark at regular intervals. What was the problem at the time of your wire replacement? My scooter suddenly won't start, I didn't get spark, everything seemed to work fine, after playing with the cables I found one that if I moved it just a bit it would give me spark, the cable was obviously broken. |
