I have been involved in testing off the shelf clothing for ability to retain heat. Basically a heat source is placed inside an item then digital thermometers placed outside the item measures the temperature rise as function of time.
Most common items measured were synthetic fleece, acrylic lined items, Dupont Thermolite, wool, down, etc.
The biggest surprise was that some fleeces were no better than a T shirt while others were pretty good but the best fleece was only about 1/2 as good as a much lighter Thermolite liner. Thermolite and a heavy wool coat nearly tied but nothing compared to a down puffer style jacket which as like a factor of seven better than Thermolite.
The down jacket tested reminded me about the scarf. The jacket tested has a zipper that zips all the way up to form a high Mandarin style, down filled collar that ended up under my chin. No need for a scarf with that set up.
Down is great for riding when you are not engaged in any activity but I wore that jacket for a walk with my dog at 50 degrees with just a T shirt under it. I was covered in perspiration after an hour.

Tell me about the helmet. I am looking at one that is similar but with blue tooth installed. I have decided that being comfortable is worth a few bucks and I no longer want to "tough it out" like I used to.

scooter said; Tell me about the helmet The helmet I chose seems more aerodynamic than some others that look a bit like astronaut helmets. No aerodynamics needed in space. My Evos will be able to protrude from the dart that I want to build without creating too much of a drag. I bid on two eBay auctions for a different helmet but was outbid by "private" accounts every time. Seemed shady so I went to Amazon.

I'm starting to question the wisdom of riding my BMS Heritage 150cc when it's this cold. I took her to work the other day when it was 35 degrees and she was rather sluggish for the first few miles until things got warmed up. I'm assuming the CVT was pretty stiff and was reluctant to work properly in the cold.
I was thinking maybe trying to warm that up too by reving the engine on it's stand and open and close the CVT a few times to loosen it up. Thoughts on this?

Today we went on a short jaunt on the Pyder and at 44F with the heated gear unplugged and the windproof "winter armor" top and bottom we were just fine. On a day to day basis, on my Morphous, I rely on the handlebar muffs, adapted from ATV use (see HippoHands) and my windproof outers. So far I have ridden in to work at 29F and with what passes for winter in coastal South Carolina, the only thing stopping me is ice or freezing rain. Not so much me but the !@#$% idiots that tend to speed up in precipatation. Oh, what was I talking about... David
