I'll be selling my car in a week & will have to depend on the CFMoto 250 to fetch groceries 10 miles away. So far, I've only taken shakedown cruises around my little development. Twice now, it has just suddenly cut off. It starts instantly and runs very quietly and smoothly and has some pep. When it dies, I have waited a couple of minutes & restarted without any problem. It ran smoothly on the way home each time. The only things I've done to it so far are an oil change & today I switched to corn-free proof.

When was the last time you adjusted the valves? When it dies does it happen when your coming to a stop? Can you catch it before it dies and goose the throttle to keep the motor running? Alleyoop

I haven't tried to adjust the valves yet. I did see the video for doing that in the help files of this website and it looks pretty simple but with the scooter running so smoothly & quietly, I don't see how I could improve the valve setting.
The first time it cut out, I was cruising between 20 & 25mph. Today I was only going about 3mph.
There is no warning. It instantly goes from purring, to off.
Thanks.

Well here is the thing being very quiet maybe not a good sign, when the valves get tight you do not hear them but what is happening is because they are to tight they are not closing all the way and are leaking compression. The dieing gets worse after the motor has warmed up some due to the metals expanding. Alleyoop

Wow, I never would have thought that. I guess I'd better dig in and see what's going on in there.
Thanks for the help.

You also could easily have a loose wire especially in the ignition circuit going to the CDI? This scooter has a DC powered CDI system, simply put lose DC to the CDI and it will instantly die. Should adjusting the valves be of no help this is the thing I would check next.

Aha. Should I just start her up and begin jiggling wires to see if it cuts off again?
Thank you.

Yes jiggle some wires, Good point JR made I would do that first. The DC CDI is fed 12v when the key is ON, 12v is always present at the ignition switch and if broken by the killswitch or ignition it will kill your motor. Alleyoop

I jiggled the heck out of every wire I could find but it kept running smoothly. I went for another ride and it died again after about 10 minutes. This time I restarted right away and it started right up and ran fine all the way home. It does sound like it idles very low once it warms up. I was going very slowly this time but I don't think I let off the throttle the last time it stalled. Could it still be the valves, even though it ran fine hot after restarting?

I turned in my car plates today. First time on blacktop since I registered my scoot. Until now, I've been riding around the dirt roads in my neighborhood & even on sandy trails.
It got up to 60 pretty fast. Engine died after 4.5 miles at 55mph. Started right up. I drove another 6.5 before the next mini-death at about 3mph. 5.5 miles until the next stall at 5mph. I took the scooter up to 64 but I'm not sure if that's top speed because it died.
I am SOOO grateful each time it starts right back up.

I don't know much about scooters but that sounds a little like a fuel pump failure, possibly due to a vacuum leak. I'd clean the carb and the fuel pump and replace all the vacuum and fuel lines unless you can pinpoint the problem first. Lines are fairly cheap and having new ones is nice. Of course make sure your spark plug boot is on tight and that all of your connectors are tight.

I'll round up some vacuum hose & swap it out. Seems like a job I can handle. Thanks!

Replace those hoses one at a time. One end off, push on new hose, follow old hose to next joint, pull off, cut new hose to length, push new hose on. Repeat.
Sudden cut offs are usually electrical. Not always, of course, but often. A CDI can do this internally, and no amount of wiggling of wires will help. I think you can buy a new CDI cheap enough that it might be worthwhile to just do it. Don't waste your money on "performance" CDI's. Once I had a scooter that cut off like that and it was a loose connection at the coil. Another time it was a bad connection between the spark plug wire and the cap over the plug. When the engine stalls, does the rear tail light stay on? If not, it might be the ignition key has a loose connection or the switch is dirty or bad. If the tail light is on, the ignition switch is OK.
Keep searching.

Honda CH250 AC fired CDI Standard replacement CDI for the CH250 scooter. This is an AC fired CDI box and will fit others as well. Works with many years Honda Helix and CN250. $9. Is that it? I see a similar looking unit on eBay but it says for '86 & '87. I have an '06. A search for Helix CDI on bikebandit came up blank. I'll check the rear light next time it dies. I'll follow your plan with the hoses, to avoid getting them hooked up wrong. Thank you.

I usually answer from the "recent posts" page and have not seen other people's answers yet.)
