I have been looking at the new Cushman II scooters. Has anybody had any interactions with the new scooters? I am waiting to see and test the new Cushman Step-Thru model.

I'm sorry, did he really say it's a 400cc engine? With those little tires?! Egads!!
Otherwise, looks cute, in a seriously retro way.

Kat, yes it's a 400cc motor that puts out 14hp, while your motor has 198cc and puts out 21hp, I think I know which one I'd rather have.

Probably not to far off from this: www.harborfreight.com/engines-generators/gas-engines/13-hp-420cc-ohv-horizontal-shaft-gas-engine-epacarb-69736.htmlAt $5,000 for the 9 hp and $6,000+ for the 14 hp model they are going to be a hard sell especially based on a Robin/Subaru utility engine. They are made by a California manufacturer of newspaper vending machines that is trying to find a new business model.

I like the comparison to a cement mixer..... (imagine a tee-hee giggley smiley here) >'Kat Watch the video and you will hear the roto-tiller/cement mixer sound The big one costs as much as a new Piaggio BV350 with ABS which has some real interstate capabilities. Should be easy to work on though and any lawn mower shop should be able to get most of the engine parts. The maintenance schedule on that Robin/Subaru EX40 engine should be interesting too as it does not have an oil pump just a dipper on the connecting rod cap to splash oil onto the moving parts so no oil filter or oil screen. Here is what the owners manual for the EX40 engine lists for scheduled maintenance: - Oil Change: Every 100 hours or Weekly whichever comes first
- Clean Spark Plug: Every 100 hours or Weekly whichever comes first
- Clean Air filter: Weekly
- Replace Air Filter: Every 200 hours or Monthly whichever comes first
- Clean fuel cup: Every 200 hours or Monthly whichever comes first
- Clean and adjust spark plug and electrodes: Every 200 hours or Monthly whichever comes first
- Replace spark plug: Every 500 hours
- Remove carbon from cylinder head: Every 500 hours
- Check and adjust valve clearance: Every 500 hours
- Clean and adjust carburetor: Every 500 hours
- Replace fuel lines: Every 1000 hours or Annually whichever comes first
- Rebuild Engine: Every 1000 hours
If you commute 2 hours a day 5 days a week the 500 hour services could be an annual event however if you ride on weekends too then they could be required several times a year.

So this thing's life measured in hours like an ATV, rather than miles. Interesting.
Also interesting, after 1000 hours of use, you rebuild the engine. ?!! That's like every Honda saying every 25,000 miles you rebuild your car's engine. Why would a manufacturer design an engine that has to be rebuilt? And how do you keep track of your "hourage" anyways? Does it come with a...hm...an hourometer or something?

(oh, and I did watch the vid. The engine sound didn't make much impression on me. What I *did* notice was the guy driving it never put both feet up. I did better than that, first time ever and on a small-wheeled Vespa!)

Purchased individually they engines are about $800 www.brandnewengines.com/EX400DSM520.aspxRemember the company that make these is not a power equipment manufacturer but makes newspaper vending machines in the form of metal boxes with a coin changer on them.

and, I would hope that they have a meter as found on the larger generators and motorhome generators that does clock the run time, but I doubt it.. I just could not find it in myself to buy that slow of a machine for that much money and that size engine.

For the money they are charging they should have used a more appropriate engine with and oil pump and full flow oil filter. What they are offering is more like the old $350 mini bikes using a lawn edger motor. Now if the used a Kholer, Kawasaki or Wisconson engine with an oil pump and full flow oil filter that would be different. This Kohler Diesel would make for an interesting bike:

For the money...forget that terd, give me a Burgman! Seriously: you get get a 2-3 year old AN400 for $5K! While they do have a certain nostalgia they are not a good value for what you get. You can still get a new 500cc Aprilia Scarabeo with a 2 year warranty for less than these Cushman style/lookalike scooters. What they do have going for them is that you can easily get any power equipment engine as a replacement from say Graingers, Northern Tool, Harbor Freight or even Craigs List. Briggs & Stratton also makes some nice Raptor Racing engines that you could use but not with the tiny wheels. Maybe they will do a better job with the Eagle.
