Gates powerlink premium belts are actually better then the bando belts and there is no difference in the amount of material in the belts . The size is 743 /20 /30 on both bando and gates . I have all three here at the house " bando , gates standard , and gates premium aramid Kevlar " and all are the same when it comes to the thickness and sizes . Bando is a very good belt which is just as good as the standard gates powerlink belts . But the gates premium with Kevlar " Aramid" are a much stronger reliable belt and will last nearly twice as long . But when it comes down to it , either belt will do and it's just ones personal preference .

geh3333I have to say that the Gates premium is where my mind was set on, so I am going most likely that route. Just wondering while I have this apart if I should make any other adjustments. currently I have hoca race variator with 12g weights and standard clutch.

To get the clutch off it only requires a break over bar, someone to press the rear brake handle (or you can just use an impact wrench, then you won't need the second person on the brakes)... It's just the center nut on the clutch to remove the bell. Just clean it out.. keep your fingers off the friction surfaces (the bell and shoes).... Easy, peasy, lemon squeezie...
As for the variator weights, I had the same set up, Hoca 115mm variator with 12 gram rollers. It's a very good set up. I did try some 11 gram sliders, and while the bike was lots of fun, I took them out because my gas milage took a huge drop but man, it was fun!
I'd just leave the clutch as is, as far as upgrades, but then I'm pretty conservative. Maybe some of the guys that mod the heck out of the 150's will chime in.

Just wondering while I have this apart if I should make any other adjustments. currently I have hoca race variator with 12g weights and standard clutch. If you want better takeoff you can go with 1500 rpm clutch springs , this will allow for the rpms to rise higher before the clutch engages improving the power at takeoff . A 1500rpm main spring will allow the clutch pulley to open slower which will keep you in a lower gear ratio longer and have faster pickup throughout lower and mid range without losing top end . And if you want to get the most out of your scoots engine you can lower the roller weights so that you can hit 7500 rpms on a straight run " that is topping out at 7500 rpms on a straight run " . You don't want to be able to reach 8000 rpms on the straight run " down hill 8000 is ok but I don't like redlining these engines that often " . And very good choice going with the gates premium belt .

urbanmadness geh3333 Thank you. Got the clutch off, but I cant seem to untangle this mess... any easy suggestions? i really do not want to take this apart. Like I said, it's a mess when one of these belts goes. I usually use a box cutter, patience (helps to have that guns n roses song playing in the background), and maybe some beer.... You can work the pulley in and out, sometimes that will help (use your hands only, you could damage the pulley if you try to clamp in something like a vise or c-clamp. Those fibers a real bugger to get out of there.

geh3333 urbanmadness alleyoopIf I were to get a new 1500 RPM Torque Spring and open this thing up. Would I be able to easily remove all the tangled treads? I can get most of it out but some pieces will definitely be left in there. Would that cause issues? * Would a new torque spring cause less MPG? * Would it cause my clutch to wear quicker? Thank you - Ital

Although the work being done is on an ATV, it is the same clutch as used in your scooter and may help you (technique wise) with the spring replacement.

When it comes to getting the clutch free of the belt peices , I would try using something to hold the pulley fully open and removing the material . Although if u use the 15000 main spring u will need to take the clutch apart anyway .

Hi All, just to give you a guys an update. I stopped by a local scooter shop and they had the Gates premium belt which they confirmed it was the same one I already had which shredded. I am hoping it was just old and nothing is wrong with they way my variator is set up. I also brought them my clutch and bought a 1500 NCY clutch spring which they will install for me. I will then bring the whole assembly home and put my scoot back together. alleyoop I would have bought the bando belt but they did not carry it :/ thank you all for your help and replies. geh3333 spandi urbanmadness alleyoop

Let us know how you progress. P.S. You might want to buy a second Gates belt and keep it in your scooter. (Just in case)

Just remember a stronger Contra spring(Torque) will wear you belt faster because it is putingg more pressure on the sides of the belt. The Clutch pulley always wants to close and the Variator is trying to open the Clutch Pulley which is now harder to open due to the stronger spring and creates a lot of heat. Alleyoop

If it's an aramid belt " Kevlar" and shredded within 2000 miles then I will almost guarantee a cvt issue . That or it somehow dry rotted due to being out in the weather . I've never had a gates Kevlar belt even come close to shredding , even with a 2000 rpm main 1500 rpm clutch springs and a bad clutch " and running the scoot very hard at that " . I would pay attention to your clutch to make sure nothing is warring prematurely . Something that is bothering me is that the gates probably didn't come with the scoot so something may have happened to the original belt " due to a bad clutch " and the gates was bought afterwards . If the part number starts with a 3 it's a Kevlar belt if it starts with a 2 it's a standard belt .
