Hi All, new issue on my 2012 PUMA 150cc valentine. Today while I was accelerating at WOT I felt a hard tug\bog and then it stopped. I immediately just took it easy and it felt fine all the way to when I came to a complete stop. I took off fine, but after a mile the tug came back and the scooter went into "nutral". It idles fine and it revs very nice but it is not engaging the gears. I am assuming it is the belt. The scooter is not at my house now as I was a few miles away so once I get it home I will take the variator cover off and see what is going on. I am just surprise it is the belt as it has a Gates Power Link Belt on from the factory. Maybe it was old? I picked up the scooter in june with 0 miles on it and she has 2k miles on now. I put a HOCA Race variator in 400 miles ago with 12G weights. Could that have cause the issue? should I get the Gates Premium this time? What do you guys think? Here is a picture when I installed the HOCA race variator. is it safe to assume that Gates Premium Drive Belt 743-20-30 would fit fine? Thank you Ital

It appears you have a Short Case Motor with 10" wheels is that correct? 8 bolts on the CVT cover? if so that is the correct belt 743-20-30. I also have a Short Case Motor on my Trike and I use BANDO belts I find them to have more material than gates belt from top to bottom and I have 6000 miles on mine and still looks great no fraying whatsoever.
In that picture I see some fraying on each side, I do not like kevlar belts they do not stretch a little to give the belts a little lee way when broken in. Alleyoop

Well if it revs nice but does not turn the wheel, if it was the belt that broke you would probably hear a lot of rattling from the variator and or weights that came out. To me it sounds more like either maybe the shaft broke inside the tranny that the clutch turns to turn the gears to turn the wheel. Alleyoop

alleyoopUgh... i hope it is not the shaft broke inside the tranny... that sounds complicated. I will try to take it apart tonight. I will let you know. Yes i do have the same style scooter as yours with the 10inc wheels :-) Since you know these scooters very well, perhaps i can copy your set up :-)

I hope it is not the shaft and just a problem with the Clutch itself that grabs the bell and turns the wheel. Do you hear any noises just sitting there and revving it a little?
Not a problem copying my setup cvt setup, it all depends on how you ride and want it to perform. Me I like to have my trike start to move at around 2300 rpms so I do not have stronger clutch springs or stronger contra springs. I do not like to have to have high rpms for the scoot to move. Alleyoop

Great, it is just the belt, make sure you clean it all out and Don't forget to take the Variator off and realign the weights they may be sideways. Also the clutch there may be pieces stuck in the contra spring.
You will get many opinions on the belt but for sure do not get a cheap one. My .02 is BANDO Alleyoop

Gates premium or if you prefer the strength of Kevlar, the Bando. (I just got a new Bando belt for my 250, and it is a very high quality Kevlar belt.) Links above ^^^^^

Yes that is a good belt email the dealer and ask if it is made in tawain and or japan. I was trying to find one with the sleeve on it to be sure it is a geniune BANDO BELT and not a fake. Alleyoop

Yup, either a gates powerlink or a bando and you're golden. I've always run Gates Powerlink, belts in my rides except for the "Italian Job".
I do start inspecting them at 2k, regardless of what I'm running, except in the aforementioned Italian job. That bike has a 20k interval for belt changes.
I"d also take the clutch off and clean it out. Sometimes it gets into the bell. When these belts go, it takes longer to clean out all the pieces then it does to change them.
Glad it turned out to only be a belt.
