I bought a lance gar 150 with 2000 miles on it and it only lasted me two weeks till there were problems. The I hear something turning when starting up, but the spark plug isn't sparking. SO what I did was replace coil, spark plug, CDI box, battery, and fuses. I was going to replace the stator, but decided to take it to a mechanic who has more experience. HE said that the starter is not engaging the engine. I can start it with the kickstart, but that is too hard to do. It's not going to be worth it to pay him to fix it, so I'm going to try to do it myself. What should I try first? Replace the starter engine or the solenoid? The starter could be unaligned with engine, but I don't have any experience splitting an engine, therefore I am hesitant. If my safety switch was broken would this occur? Should I try hot wiring? Any suggestions??

If the starter is turning and not the engine. I would pull the starter out and check the shaft splines . If they are good I would move to the starter clutch.

The starter is turning and not the engine. I will try that. The mechanic said it would cost over $500 for him to fix it, he said the engine would have to be split to fix it. Also "when you use the kick start it turns the engine too fast". The engine was modified too. He said there are internal problems in the engine and its not worth fixing. What do you guys think? Bought this sucker for $1200 and it lasted for two weeks. Any thoughts?

To get starter clutch you will need to drain the oil and remove the right side cover . The part of the case thst holds the crank does not need to be opened .
If you kick start it and it runs well with out any strange noises I say fix it .

First check the starter and the see if the gear is good and not worn down. If good then it is most likely the starter clutch that has the problem. To get to that you need to take the flywheel off, stator and pickup coil and take the plate off about 8 bolts. You will need to replace the gasket and the crank oil seal which is inside the Plate. Here is what the starter Clutch looks like. Alleyoop

If he paid 1200 for a used china scoot "which I'm sure it is" when a new one cost less , then he got ripped . " and by all means I'm not trying to be an a-s " I think informing him is the right thing to do so it dosent happen again .

One good thing is you came to the right place . You'll come to find out that these engines are easy to work on , even with little or no experience . There is more knowledge here on the gy6 engine than in most motorcycle shops in the U.S

I definitely got ripped off I'm just another craigslist sucker. I finally have time to work on this. I have the bolt on the flywheel off put I cannot pull it, because the magnets are too strong! What fly puller should I buy that would fit this scooter?
Thanks for all your help guys!
