Riding my 500cc out to Mother Honda to get parts for the Goldwing, I had a chance to think about the little 150 that started my foray into the world of two wheels.
My Aprilia is a better bike in almost every way, but I still have a soft spot for that little 150cc, Chinese fortune cookie. It had three of my favorite things, going for it. It was red, it was fun and it was cheap. . Sure, you couldn’t take it on the freeway, it wasn’t quick, and the riding position was a bit cramped but these limitations made it enduring, gave the bike character and made riding it, an experience. I liked it so much that in the year and a half I owned it; I put nearly 7000 miles on it.
You always rode the 150cc at its limit. Running at WOT on those little 10” wheels always made you feel like “boy racer” riding on the ragged edge. The Aprilia, by contrast is never ridden at its limit. You get out on the freeway at 65mph and it feels like the bike is bored. At 70mph, it’s just waking up.
The Aprilia is fast, poised and is perfectly happy in the fast lane. On the open road, it’s the best scooter I’ve ever ridden, but around town, it’s a real pig. You have to work, to ride the Aprilia in an urban setting. In contrast, the 150 felt like a little sports car in an urban setting and it made riding in traffic almost fun. The other thing is you were not afraid to customize it, or drill it full of holes. After all, I only paid 500 bucks for it and it would never become a classic. The Goldwing and the Aprilia you always cringe if you do something to the bike that isn’t stock. You’re always afraid you will take something away from the bike, rather than make it better.
Riding the 150 was always an event while riding the Aprilia is simply “un-eventful”. Don’t get me wrong, the Aprilia is a great bike, with its distinctly Italian styling that I love but, someday, I hope to own another 150 for those times I want to go bombing around the neighborhood.

We all have our loves and likes and it's the same when on two wheels or more. Sometimes, the cheapest smaller toy has a softer spot in your heart than the big expensive ones. I think the very fact that it's cheaper to own and operate has a tendency to push the limits of it in modding and riding simply because you aren't overly worried about a return for value. Granted, sometimes ppl become more reckless, which isn't smart, but our willingness to seek greater levels of fun with it are increased because we aren't as concerned with loss to the degree we are with the expensive toys.

Totally agree.. I have no qualms about doing mods to my Roketa mc-79-250. I can always buy cheap replacement parts. I fret over making changes to my 1990 FJ1200 sport/tourer. Sometimes I wish the paint and decals were not near mint, so I could put my own styling on it. But I won't, at least not for a long while. Not because it would ruin the resale value, but because so much care was taken to keep it "factory paint"

Thanks for your thoughts on big and small scoots. We all experience the urge to trade up at times. The 150cc scoots are like classic British sports sports cars. They make you feel like you are going fast. The other thing I like about 150cc scoots is that you can load then into the back of a pick up or on a trailer without much sweat. If Kawasaki sells their 300cc scoot in the states, I may have to cave in and get one.

I think we all get the itch to trade up at times, Recently I actually put Fawkes on CL.. The ad said not for sale but will trade for motorcycle... Got some interesting offers, but in the end I simply could not part with him. I think the only way I would trade him is for my old 1980 KZ 550, sure loved and miss that bike..

You know what brother,, This is the only reason why i still have my 150,,like I said before,,Ive had Harleys,Hondas,Kawi's,Yamahoppers,,over 35 bikes, trikes, and quads in my day,,BUT,,this 150 scoot has to be the funnest ride i ever owned,,it struggles to do 55 mph,,cruises real sweet at 45.I will never sell it,,and if it blows up I will buy another motor for it in a heartbeat,,i feel like a little kid on a super modded mini bike when riding it,,also it gets more looks than my Ninja 900RR ever did,,even the chicks..lol..I will never be without a scooter as long as i can help it..totally awesome ride....

Aprilia is only importing 50cc scoots to the US now? At least we can still get the Mana 850.

Aprilia is only importing 50cc scoots to the US now? At least we can still get the Mana 850. And they took away the $5,999 plain Mana leaving only the $12,000 GT version. Piaggio is also limiting dealer support and parts availability making things harder on the dealers too. It is almost like they're mad at Aprilia for making more compelling bikes using their engines.
