has anyone out there tried mounting an after market oil cooler? any success?
my daily ride is about 25 miles and half that is in stop and go traffic, engine heats up pretty bad. the plastic shroud is still over my engine. has anyone come up with a way to get these to cool better? by about 1/2 through my trip i start to get the valve "pinging" under 3/4 to full throttle and have adjusted the valves down to .003 clearance now but still getting it so can only assume it is getting to hot. dont get the noise or loss of power early in trip. and dont want to adjust them tighter then i already have. they were at .005 when i first got the scoot a month ago ... tried .004 and now at .003.

Try using higher octane fuel or an actane booster,,sounds like the pinging is from fuel quality,,also might get an Iridium plug, better coil and CDI.Another Idea would be a fan scoop, and wrap your header pipe..as for the cooler I have no experience with them..

FYI - Valve tapping has nothing to do with octane. You use higher octane to prevent pre-ignition in a high compression engine. Pre-ignition causes all sorts of problems, including damaging valves, but is not caused by improper valve lash.

Actually having the valves too tight reduces their closed time in contact with the seat reducing the cooling cycle causing them to run hotter which could lead to pinging along with backfiring as fuel mix passes over overheated valves.
A cold air intake extension might help as would using a synthetic oil. Oil coolers can be a mixed bag and there are probably too many bargain models out there that would restrict oil flow so much that they would do more harm than good.

Sorry, I should have said high octane fuel will not prevent sounds you hear from improperly gapped valves.

drz,
Welcome to the site!
For seven years I rode a Xingyue 150 and documented some of the mods I made which worked well. I live in Texas where I often ride in 100+ degree weather and the air-cooled scoots get HOT!
I first installed a fan scoop, and it helped, but VERY marginally. I then modified it with an extension made from PVC tubing, PUTTING IT OUT PAST THE PLASTICS and INTO FRESH AIR. It lowered my oil-temp by around 20 degrees if I recall. Here are pix of the mod. Easy to do, and effective. (Even sitting still, it offers SOME help by taking in air further from the engine).
For cosmetics, I wrapped the white PVC in chrome tape. This setup REALLY worked, lowering oil-temp on hot days from excessive, to acceptable.
I later added a 2-stroke-type performance exhaust, with a full 1-inch header and heat-wrapped it to avoid the pipe heating the crankcase, since the slightly larger pipe was now in close proximity to the block.
The 1-inch header also greatly added to the general ease-of-tuning and low-end torque. The factory headers on these are actually SMALLER inside-diameter than the engine exhaust-port! THAT is a BAD design... It creates a major restriction in the exhaust RIGHT AT THE HEAD. I made my own header from an RV generator head-pipe, but you CAN buy quality aftermarket 1" headers. I also replaced the fan-cover with a chrome one, strictly for appearance. They are NOT as tough as the black originals, but look mighty sweet... LOL!
Here's the larger header and stock header so you can see the difference...
My experience (in VERY hot weather) showed the fan-scoop DID help, but moving it OUT into the wind helped a LOT!
Hope this may be of help to you...
Sincerely,
Leo in Texas
PS: Last year, I traded in the '07 Xingyue 150 on a used '07 Kymco 250. The only reason I did so was because local traffic has changed dramatically, requiring that I have a scooter which WILL run at LEAST 70+mph. I love the "standard-issue" GY6 150's, but mine just was no longer safe due to its limited top-speed, and cruising-speed.

Ahh,, There is that mean looking fan scoop Leo made,,I remember that thing..lol
Last time I was looking at coolers they where more than half the price of a new motor,,so I said no thanks...

Jerseyboy,
Yeah, oil-coolers are pretty pricey! These GY6's are in use all over the world with great success, even in hot tropical places... But... If you can lower the oil-temp by 20 degrees you'll add miles and years to the little guys. (It's easy to check your oil-temp with a cooking thermometer).
I loved that little 150, especially the appearance! It looked VERY hot! It handled great, too... However, I like the performance of the 250 better yet... And, old "Minnie Mouse" looks like Chinese 150 anyway... As long as the traffic ran 55mph or less, the 150 was "marginally" OK. But now, it's VERY comforting to enter the local 45mph posted surface streets, and roll on the throttle and QUICKLY match the "actual" 65mph traffic... AND also, to be able to sneak onto the freeway when desired... LOL!
Rides safe, Jerseyboy!

if you can see my front pipe has a copper pipe with slits in it and held on with hose clips And i run a cooler iridium plug and my CVT cover is vented no bbk 50cc gy6 i am 130kgs and at 64 its good to pass younger lighter people CDI is standard rev limiter has been tricked. Standard Keihin carb dialed in run 98 octane and it has a pipe

PROBLEM posting pictures from imgur tryed tiny pic the other day won a trip to USA but it revolves round putting your credit details a box As i won the same comp about 3months ago BS The problem is you are pasting in the code boxes as part of the URL, just paste in the URL itself, the forum software takes care of the rest. Here's what you had: " alt=""] Here's what it should look like: Note: The capitalized IMG and /IMG and their surrounding brackets should not be there.

Yup it all adds up,CVT cover modded, pipe covered/wrapped,fan scoop, plug,CDI,coil,un restricted air filter, free flowing exhaust means a super efficient running motor that will stay cool on the hottest days. I would say just the air filter and exhaust would be a big help,,getting more air in/out.

well have ordered a scoop for fan side .... and am working on an oil cooler .... oil cooler price is not a concern for me .... i make cooling coils at work (micro channel condensers) and i am able to fab any size i desire and just pay for the metal used about $5-10 so in the works of getting a spare crank case and letting my shop welder put in a plug in the high pressure side .... well flow restrictor not totally plugging it. then drill and tap my oil feed to the cooler off the high pressure side of restrictor and put it back in on the lower side .... this should cool the oil before it gets up to the head... and being that the flow is not totally blocked off just restricted should allow oil to flow to the top if anything should ever happen to the cooler..... well here is crossing fingers and hoping anyway. and incase it goes completely sideways ..... acquired another gy6 150 scoot with bad frame to steal motor from til a new one comes.
