Hello there everyone! So I'm a total newb to this site, as well as the world of scooters. I just got myself a used Chinese 150cc scooter, and some issues are starting to pop up. Yesterday, out of nowhere, the engine just got really loud and almost sounds like a motorcycle now. And it also backfires or pops (I don't know the difference but I do know that there is a difference) on deceleration. Yeah it sounds cool, but I know it can't be good in the long term. Like I said, I'm a total newb when it comes to any sort of mechanical stuff. Or how engines work, and all the parts and pieces that keep it working. However, I am very eager to learn in fact, one of the reasons I got the scooter was to learn about engines and fixing them myself. So with all that said if anyone could point me in the right direction I would greatly appreciate it. I did find this: "First place I would look is the HEADER PIPE FLANGE connected to the Motor. See if it lost a nut or two and blew out the Gasket." Read more: scootdawg.proboards.com/thread/45313#ixzz32vPhGoKYNot exactly sure what a header pipe flange is, and it seem the picture that was posted is no longer available. But seeing as at the top of the page is says "We Are Moving!" and gives a link to this site, I figured it'd be best to make an account on here and ask around. Thank you in advance for any help, and I look forward to getting to know my scooter better!

He is telling you to look where the exhaust meets the engine. There should be two nuts there. If one backs out, sometimes the exhaust ring (gasket) falls out and it doesn't seal.
You shouldn't ride the scooter until this is fixed as it can cause additional damage.
The scooter getting loud is an exhaust leak, the popping sound is from the same cause. These engines need some back pressure (exhuast system restriction) to run correctly.
The fix is very simple, just losen the other exhaust flange bolts (you will probably find one or both missing), get a couple exhuast nuts (don't use nylocs) a couple of lock washers, and a new gasket, and you will be on the road for 10 or 15 bucks.
A simple trick to keep the gasket in place when putting it back together is to stick the new gasket in the head with a small dab of RTV sealent. Just a little on one little place of the gasket is all you need. Oh, and make sure the old gasket is out of the head as well. Use a awl, or small screwdrive and pry it out without nicking the head.
A tip for people who are learning to work on scooters is to use only 1/4 drive socket sets instead of the 3/8 sets. The reason being is you are way less likely to break a bolt or stud with the 1/4" drive sets from over tightening things.

Awesome response thank you very much! I looked in the spot suggested, and sure enough, one of the nuts was missing. Not sure about the gasket but it's most likely gone. Is there any way you could point me to a new gasket and maybe the exhaust nuts you were mentioning? Thanks again for the help.

Just about any of the sponcers up top will have what you need, but I have had really good luck with Scrappydawg but, all of the sponcers are really good. what size engine? 150cc?

You can just go to the hardware store and get new nuts for the studs. Just take the other nut off and they will match it up for you. Alleyoop

if the bike is a 150cc, it would be the first link.
you might just try getting some nuts and snugging it down. Alot of times you can get away with reusing the gasket.
The gasket sits in a recess in the port.

Yes it's a 150cc. And thanks I'll check that out tomorrow and go get some nuts when there's some daylight out.

you might just try getting some nuts and snugging it down. Be very careful that you're using METRIC nuts. The hardware store may not have metric nuts, and using the wrong nuts will damage the studs. Home Depot, I believe, at least stocks some low-quality metric hardware, but check carefully! I always get a pocket-full of good quality metric hardware every time I visit an auto-wrecker. They often let me have it at no charge, or just a few dollars.

Alrighty I just received the gasket alleyoop suggested, new exhaust nuts, as well as an ngk iridium spark plug (as I'm sure it still has the original). And hopefully I can get that installed today. My band has a show tonight, and practice in a few hours so I might not have time. But I have the weekend off so it'll get done soon enough!
Thanks guys for all your time and help, I greatly appreciate it!

Oh yeah baby that exhaust gasket with two new nuts and some elbow grease did the trick! Super sexy with no more Harley sound lol. Runs so much smoother. I can't thank you guys enough for your direction and help.
