My wife doesn't let me work on my Genuine Buddy because we bought it new (except to change oil). What is a good scooter for easy tinkering/modding? I don't want to remove body panels to access the drive train. The Grom is an obvious choice but I can't spend that much. An authentic Ruckus can cost a lot and the 150cc upgrade is not so easy. Any ideas? Maybe a Ruckus clone with factory 150cc? A 50cc MADA$$ is affordable and engine swaps are pretty simple. They are just hard to find. I could just buy a normal scooter and remove the skin.

I don't know but it sounds like your wife keeps really close tabs on you. Are you sure you just don't want another scooter?

Wheelbender6,
Buddies don't usually require much wrenching... They're mighty good "right out of the box". Light, FAST, sharp and more "Italian" than Italian scoots... LOL! I think the only mod I'd make would be to remove the wicker basket if it had one... Now about the missus... Just remind her that every hour working on the scoot is an hour you're not hangin' with your pals in the local strip-club...

My Buddy has another year on the warranty so engine and cvt mods are not a good idea until it expires. It really requires little attention. When I had a motorized bike, I had to make all the brackets and improvise a lot. I guess I miss that.

I'm actually not impressed with the roudy. There is more plastic to play with then you think there is, no storage, and they rattle. Body parts are not easy to find (headlights for example)....
The vintage, atually isn't that bad to work on, even though there is quite a bit of plastic... You can access most things just removing the seat pan which is very easy on that bike.

The Rowdy could work well but I'd like to keep the wheelbase short so I can haul them to the beach in my little pickup. The Mada$$es still seem ideal but are pricey and hard to find. I had seen 50cc maddogs but I didn't realize they were offering a 150cc version until PCBGY6 mentioned it. Already stretched and has the fat back tire! This little Rocketa allows easy engine access and still has a short wheelbase for easy hauling. A little cooler than the naked MC and still priced under a grand. I'm even considering a CT-70 clone with a 125cc mill. Also under a grand.
