Hi everyone, I got one here that's a bit of a head-scratcher for me, but I'm hoping someone smarter than I am can point me in the right direction. I am the 2nd owner of a Baotian BT49QT-9, or at least that's the manufacturer name and model number that is stamped on my scooter. The stock tires need changing. In attempting to remove the rear tire, the nut would not loosen. After trying to clean the gunk off of it, I stared at it and noticed that the nut was something I had never seen before (I'm not a mechanic, just a general DIY enthusiast). I've attached some pictures. I apologize if this is a stupid question. Does anybody have any idea how to remove this sucker? I don't really want to torque on anything unless I'm sure I won't break something. It won't budge. Is this a locking nut of some kind? Or is it something else? Any and all help is greatly appreciated. Thanks!

I'm not an authority on that particular type of nut but it appears to me to be a lock nut. And being that it's in an environment that is subject to moisture, it's probably just rusted itself on. And it's also more than likely suppose to be very tight as you wouldn't want a wheel to become loose at any time. Putting all that together, I'd put a socket on a breaker bar and give it a little more persuation. But that's just my two cents, and a wild guess.

I'd go to Harbor Freight and get an impact wrench for that before scratching your head too hard.

i got mine off by using a 4 foot bar attached to the end of my ratchet. after using wd40 multiple times and letting it soak i still had to stand on that bar to get the nut off. i don't recommend that method but it worked. as mentioned above, buy or borrow an impact wrench and save yourself a headache.

[snip] Looks like a variation of the 'NY-lock nut' to me. It's a special 'lock-nut' with a (generally) Teflon ring inserted to prevent vibratory loosening. Note the threads of the bolt 'cutting through' and pushing up the insert material at the 9 o'clock position in your photo: ...and compare with an unused nut: While the insert will add a bit of resistance during tightening/loosening, it shouldn't rise to the level of difficulty you describe. As mentioned by others I'd wager it's simply a matter of exposure to the elements resulting in corrosion lock. There is nothing 'special' about these nuts that would lend themselves to any greater tendency to 'break things' when attempting to remove them. Typical removal procedures should suffice. Either a torque wrench, breaker bar, or heat applied to the nut. (Note that heat applied will 'ruin' the insert, but a replacement nut should be easy enough to find.)

Yes, looks like it is rusted on, heat the nut not the shaft and it should break loose. Alleyoop

Thank you for all the advice! I managed to remove the nut after repeated applications of WD-40 and just getting a bit western with it. Fortunately nothing broke and the wheel came off fine.
Now maybe I can actually get the tires on...
