I just picked up for free a 2009 Genuine Scooter Company Roughhouse 50 2 stroke on/off road scooter! It does not start but does turn over and has spark. It's a bit rough around the edges but not trashed by any means.  |

It had been sitting a while. At first the kickstart would not budge and I feared a locked engine. Pulled the spark plug and a few squirts of PB Blaster did the trick. The spark plug looks brand new and does spark when we turned it over. I tried some starting fluid spray to no avail. Could there be a safety interlock on this? I know my trike requires front brake application and a friend's motorcycle requires the kickstand to be up...

Most require one or the other brake handle to be squeezed. The battery is most likely shot, even if it reads decent voltage, old batteries can read good voltage while standing, but not have enough amps to crank the engine. You can try jumping it before purchasing a new battery to be sure, but I would bet a paycheck the battery is shot after sitting for a long time.
You probably should pull the carb apart and clean it really well, sitting gas (especially with ethanol blends) can gum up the fuel ports.

We used the battery from my trike and the engine was turning over very nicely. There was a half full bottle of fuel stabilizer in the cargo compartment, so that may be a good sign. Carb overhaul this weekend!

Now that is the deal of all deals for scoot people. I've had a couple given to me but they were mostly junk and I just stripped them down for parts. Sold a few parts on CL but I'm keeping one of the motors to build for a spare at some point. |
