Uhm, don't kill the thief 'cause that's escalation and probably also against some law? As for your scoot, I don't know. I've only had a concrete mushroom (REALLY heavy) and my car's plate renewal sticker stolen. I'd think if you really like that particular scooter, and if the thief didn't get into it they just stole it, then I suppose it won't hurt to take it back. But if you just were like "meh" about the scoot, or sort of wanted something else, and especially if the thief did any damage besides purely cosmetic, then I agree with angler and have them pay it off. But remember that can make your rates go up. >'Kat

It could be a LOT worse...
Back in 1978, I had my Harley Electra-Glide stolen. It was chained to a post, and blocked by my two cars. The cretins came "in-force" and lifted my cars up and moved them over, froze the titanium chain with Freon and broke it. Threw the hog into their maxi-van and were gone in less than a minute (a little neighbor kid watched the whole thing).
I had EXPENSIVE full-coverage insurance. I had just moved from Illinois to Texas, and the carrier refused to pay off because the theft took place outside of Illinois. Yeah... So much for "being in good hands"...
These guys came back a month later, trying the same thing with another guy's hog, and he was not as naïve as I was. Unfortunately for the thieves, he was also a licensed, class III machinegun dealer. In only a few seconds, the thing escalated into a shoot-out involving full-auto weapons on both sides, severely wounding the bike owner, and killing all of the thieves. The owner's return-fire against the thieves also totaled his uninsured bike. For the record, the police responding made only one comment to the victim before placing him in the ambulance: "Nice shooting..." That refreshing bit of police attitude convinced me on the spot to become a permanent Texas resident, and I've never regretted THAT decision.
These confrontations can turn UGLY really FAST. Oh, and no, there was never another attempted bike theft in that area in my memory.
That was in 1977 and I never was able to afford another bike until the invasion of Chinese scooters. I got my first one (a Xingyue 150) seven years ago, and this year, to safely run with faster and faster traffic, I "upgraded" to a used Kymco 250. Be glad you may not have to wait thirty years to replace your ride... LOL!
Ride safe,
Leo in Texas

Seems to me that a nice .22-250 from half a mile might have been more practical than full auto...

[Leo in Texas I guess I am not for shootouts, but if someone comes to take your stuff and are armed with automatic weapons, then it sounds like they deserve what they get. No tears shed. Vive la Texas.

Well the thieves spray painted the whole bike some color, don't know which color but it was decided that it's a total loss. They're charging one guy with agg motor vehicle theft 1st degree. That agg and 1st degree means those are some serious charges in this state. I found a new like 200i on craigs for $1999 from a dealer 150mi away, free delivery too. Buying it tonight. I really liked that blur but oh well, life happens.

The purpose of insurance is to make one "whole" after a loss. It's not part of law enforcement and not intended to impose punishment on the scum of the earth. I've had a bike stolen and just had one totaled. First time it was my insurer and they paid in full. Recently it was the person that hit me policy and also paid in full. The price of the premium was money well spent. It beats the out of a ton of locks and chains every time I leave my scooter parked.

Well, you DO have a point... But this was across the small courtyard of our "high-end executive apartment complex..." The guy was WAY ahead of the stone-age times, with a radio-transmitter alarm on the bike. Remember, this was long before PC's and cell-phones. He was awakened by his alarm, came out on his balcony and confronted the bandits, belt-fed M-60 in-hand. THAT is USUALLY enough to persuade MOST miscreants to retreat. Not these guys. Hard-core outlaws, bad to the bone, not the least bit afraid to fight it out.
One immediately shot the owner in the belly with a 12-gauge load of 00 buckshot. Pretty good shooting for a sawed-off shotgun at 25 yards... and all 9 pellets got him.) Don't EVER underestimate the skills of your enemies... Two of the others opened up with Mac-9's. The wounded victim then gave them "the whole nine yards" with a full belt of 7.62 NATO (that's .308 Win. for us civilian types... LOL!) from his M-60.
This basically reduce the thieves to a "liquid state", and reduced the victim's hog to scrap-metal. This was pre-"politically-correct" 1970'sTexas at its extreme, and all parties involved were testosterone-charged macho-on-a-stick guys taken to the tenth power, but whether one agrees with it or not, THAT attitude has kept America free for many generations.
I'm old and mellow these days, but I'm under no illusions that releasing balloons and happy thoughts will EVER replace releasing a hail of lead and standing your ground when the chips are down, and it's one-on-one... Or, one-on-a-whole-posse... When the naïve chickens try to "reason" with the fox, they quickly become fox-chow.
Keep yer' powder dry, and keep yer' insurance paid up... (and read the FINE PRINT in your policy...)
