Hello,
I just recently bought a scooter and some friends are joining in on the fun. I am helping a friend fix his scooter. The scooter runs fine (once it is jumped) but it cannot be kick started or start by the ignition. We thought it was the battery (and the other battery was dead), but after charging and putting it in the new battery. I hear one attempt at turning over then the battery / lights on the scooter die out.
I measure the battery after that and it is down to about 8V. Not sure where to go from here. I don't think it's the spark plug because it does spark when it is being jumped by a car.

If it starts giving it a jump then your battery is toast reading out 8v after 1 or 2 cranks on it says it has a bad cell or two.
How many AMPS is the new battery and how many CCAs. A battery that has CCAs lower than 100 will only turn a good motor with good compression a couple times before all juice is gone. Also jump the battery start it and check put a volt meter on the battery and see if it is charging. Alleyoop

It is 12V 6AH. I jumped it with my car and it started up instantly. Drove it around and when I came back tried to turn it off then on and nothing happened. I'm starting to think there might be a short in it some where.

I'm starting to think there might be a short in it some where. it's not charging. from reading other posts it is most-likely the rectifier or/and stator. i'll see if i can find a post explaining how to test those.

Thank you! More info. When I do charge it with my battery tender it will get a little over 12V then when I try to start it same thing. Nothing happens it goes down to 8V and it sounds like I can hear the battery acid in it moving around (kind of scary)

My friend got it from a batteries plus down the road. We had to put the acid in ourselves and the guy told him he didnt need to charge it, but I did anyway - overnight on the battery tender. Then tried it out the next morning.

John that is how they start it and it starts right up. The battery is either bad or the battery is not fully charged. Usually on a new battery that you put acid in you have to charge it with a regular charger to fully charge them. A Maintenance Trickle Charger will not fully charge a brand new battery, they will ONLY maintain it after it is fully charged. Alleyoop

6 amps may not be enough as my 150 used 10 amps . Note mine has EFI so it needs more juice to run . Yeah trickle charger is normal 1/2 amp so you would need to have a charger that could put out 2 amps to fully charge it . Above 2 amps and you risk cooking the battery . batteries Around twice the money you can a lithium battery For my cars I try to get a higher CCA rated battery than suggested to have a lil extra rather than just enough .

These batteries are can be very sensitive. U have to charge it for about 4 hrs at about 2 amps . U can not charge them with a high amperage like 10 amps even during first charge . They tell you in the directions exactly what to do. Also if u charged it overnight at a higher amperage u toasted it.
