For those with 49/50cc scoots, what is your average top speed and if it's higher than normal, what things got you there? Please also list your body weight (or at least light, medium, heavy).

TaoTao ATM50, 50-51MPH GPS verified, Pretty much everything is stock, save for these things: - Reduced spark plug gap, to 0.10", to save power (the Taotao's stator is very weak, and barely able to power the lights and charge the battery at the same time). - Fuel with BP Premium oct gasoline which gives a noticeable boost in performance - Installed a windshield, not sure if it helps any in speed improvements. - Removed rear trunk, less wind drag - Installed a LED tail/brake light, again, to preserve energy. - Upped the side stand peg by 1 inch, so it would not scrape the asphalt while cornering That's all. I probably could equip it with lighter rollers (or even sliders), to get better takeoff speed (and get the engine going ~2k RPM's higher when taking off).

Wow, both of y'all make me jealous. I guess it's my weight/height (6'5 250 or so). I just want 40; I'll never ask for a speed increase above 40! Plus my kick drags on left turns (I can just about lay her down on right turns) and I didn't know you could raise that; how?

TaoTao CY50-T3 secret 63 with performance CDI and coil, and upjetted with main and 35 pilot, 45 GPS verified. When my Peace Dash 50 was running, It would average about 35 at WOT with no modifications.

Wutzthedeal do you have 10 inch wheels ? Those tend to be slower , unstable compared to larger wheels , and small for a large rider . I had a TaoTao ATM it would say 55 MPH but was really 45 but sometimes hit 50 . I was too tall for it and hated it . I later bought a Jonway Magnum 2T 49cc witha handsome boy body and 13 inch wheels and wow I was not having to slump over and was cozy . The taller and wider tires 13060/13 rode so much better then the 10s which felt like stunt driving at top speed . Bone stock other than a 68main jet replaced with a 75 and NGK iridium I could hit 50 on my speedo then it would fizzle at 8,000 RPMs with exhaust restriction . I put on a racing CDI the blue aluminum finned and same thing though takeoff was better . If I ported the exhaust port and replaced the pipe I could easily do 60 MPH with the ability to top out at 10,500 RPMs instead of 8,000 well sometimes 8,5000 and it would stall at 9,000 when going downhill . I removed the engine and noticed the exhaust port is D shaped with plenty of material in it where my 47mm BBK it was O shaped and it would hit 10,500 with a MMG pipe . I am 200 lbs and my scooter is 188 lbs compared to my TaoTao that was 249lbs .
In the small displacement scooter class a 2T is by far a better option to have fun and able to tune and tweak to go faster . MPG is not as good if you have it screaming plus a quart of 2T oil for me was good for 650 miles depending on how fast I went . No oil changes or valves to adjust . Now the MMG does not have a baffle and my scooter sounds like a Honda CR80 compared to the stock exhaust which did have a good 2T sound but not that loud . I can pop a wheelie at 50MPH when the powerband hits at 9,000 RPMs with a BBK . When it was 49cc I could still do 40+ up a steep hill with a running start . I did several tests comparing my speedo and a radar and I was doing 46 on radar and 50 on my speedo .

my scoots with 10 inch wheels seem pretty stable up to 50 mph, not many instances that i need to go over 40 really anyways

Millsc have you ever ridden a motorcycle before ? I have had all kinds of offroaders and pedal mopeds with 17 inch wheels which was very stable but they are slow since chain driven instead of having a CVT . The first scooter I ever rode was a Honda Spree which I later bought as my second scooter and dang it had small wheels maybe 10s unsure and I think my Elite they were smaller than the Spree . Well anyways from the first moment I noticed how much more nimble and faster reaction it had in cornering and turning that it was awkward almost like buzzed driving . I then had a Honda CR125 and a Suzuki GS550 I was used to riding on . Even my Honda Express and UrbanExpress ( I love Hondas as they loved me back ) had taller wheels but not as wide . I have been up to 160 MPH on a Honda Hurricane ( renamed CBR ) it was exciting as well as scary since the wind pressure made water squirt out of my eyes causing me to come to a stop as I could not see . I only had on sunglasses and was a no helmet dummy as I was not planning on going that fast but a young man often gives into temptation . I was addicted to cruising 100MPH+ when I had enough rode as it was better than drugs with the adrenalin rush of a powerfull motorcycle . I have ridden since I was a pup and got to experience many motorcycles and ATVs as my group of friends we would swap out and take turns riding other peoples toys . I had been out of the two wheel scene since I first found out I was going to a papa bear . I broke down and bought a TaoTao ATMa 50 since it was 700 brand new ready to ride with a warranty already upjetted and fuel lines replaced by the dealer . I was hating spending 80 a week in gas since I have many clients that I have to do service calls for at there place . It was fun at first since it was a new toy and I really love and missed being on two wheels but it sucked compared to my Honda scooters I had to use as a comparison against . It was faster than some scooters like those restricted but it made me nervous going at top speeds as the short wheelbase is not steady at top speeds compared to a larger frame scooter or MC . My Magnum I can go in a curve at 45 with no hands on the grips with unbalanced street knobbies that ride like an old school minibike feel . MY Spree I could do stunt driving where others wrecked trying to copy me and I know I would have too on my TaoTao as it was nothing like it . My Echarm has 16s and would be stable at high speeds until I went over 65 and would shake violently if I removed a hand to fix my visor or give a one finger salute . With Shinkos F&R I can ride at 45 or less with no hands . So in short I just thought I would share some of many years of wisdom I learned with my experiences as I was on of the first to get the new moped license just introduced in SC when I was 14 and my MC license right after my 16th birthday and didnt bother to get a car license until I was 18 since my parents would not let me drive their cars , I have bought and sold boocoos of two wheelers and most of my friends had a car so I rode with them when the weather was bad .
Sorry to have hijacked your thread but I really wanted to make my point across about the small wheeled shortcase scooters vs a longcase with taller and sometimes wider tires . The shorter the tire the more times it makes a rotation in a given distance where the taller the wheel is less . To me a true scooter experiance is on "doughnuts " or fat tires like 130/60/13s as my Echarm with 16s is what I consider a crossover or in between a scooter and a motorcycle as its more like a MC feel

daughter's scoot was a 50cc gy6 4t and it would run 35 to 40 mph with no problem and that was with me at 240 lbs

It's not that the 10 in wheels are less stable. it's that they turn better than a motorcycle's. With a motorcycle, you have added gyro forces, trying to keep the wheel moving in the same direction. That could be a good thing, or a bad thing. Good in a sense, that riding over potholes will make your handlebars less want to pull to the side. Bad, in a sense that it's much harder to turn. On my VT750, going @ 100MPH, it takes quite an amount of time and space to actually turn (for instance, I see a pothole in the road, it takes a good 200-300ft before the obstacle to begin the maneuver to avoid it. My ATM50 doesn't do 100MPH, but it takes at least half the space to be able to avoid a road object from my VT750.
Another benefit from 10in tires, is they have: 1- Less wind resistance and 2- Less weight than larger tires; which really is a good savings on a 50cc (as any improvement helps on those tiny engines).
I'm 160-170LBS (170 on a good day), and 6'3", and did not find the ATM50 small at all. It is made for tiny chinese, but if you're sitting on the passenger's seat, you still have ~1ft of kneespace left!
Again, I'd like to mention, when I say 50MPH GPS verified, I mean 50MPH GPS verified! I don't mean 50MPH on the speedo... The speedo would say 100kmh, or ~62MPH.

Yeah I do have 10s, skutta. I'm not as much of a scooter connoisseur as you (and I'm thankful because since this is my first scooter, I'm not "disappointed" by comparing it to "better" scooters as I'm sure you were with Hondas and such). I can take some tight turns to my right; still gotta stop the stand dragging to my left. While my sliders give me mad acceleration, I live in a small town where acceleration doesn't really serve much purpose as most of my riding is rural. We don't have a single traffic light in my town. I think I need to jump back up in weights.

Hey, you can just buy a $5 metal file, and file off part of the frame, where the side stand peg hits the frame. I did it on mine, took about a good 30 minutes. Also make sure you protect the back plastic, as the file might scrape it, and leave marks on it. After I finished, I bought some cheap black silicon glue, and put it over the naked metal. Hasn't rusted, and the side stand peg, actually flips up damped instead of hitting naked metal against metal.
Total cost: $10-$12 in Home Depot. Total time : ~30 minutes.
You only need to file off about 2 millimeter of material on the frame side; it will move up the peg by almost 1 in. 1 in is good enough, I moved it up 1.5in from stock, and I can corner so hard that the tires give way, rather than the peg hitting the floor.
