You need a gear puller that will fit behind the gear, some used a Hammer type puller but had to file down the hooks on the end of the fingers so it would fit behind the gear and hold others used this one: Alleyoop This is a more expensive gear puller: This is a much cheapaer gear puller:

It may work as long as the end of it will fit behind the gear, if not you will have to do some filing, but it will also be harder to turn the screw to pull it is a bar and not a bolt that you can put a wrench on it .But for that price you can give it a shot. Alleyoop

So how exactly is the gear put on? Is it a glue, or actually screwed on? Will it just pop-off, or does it need to be unscrewed?
I don't know much about this, but found a few old threads on other forums on this procedure.

The gear is just pressed on the shaft that is all. Now to get it back on you will have to do some hammering to get it back to where it was. You will need a pipe that will fit on the crank and I would use a big washer so the pipe would be hitting the washer and not the gear, then you smack the end of the pipe using a piece of wood on the end of the pipe to hammer on..
To make the gear go on much easier with to much hammering it on Heat up the gear around the hole and then bang it on. Heating it will expand it a hair. Alleyoop

Is there a specific dimension this should be put back on to, like distance between back of gear and case or should the shaft be marked to put it back in the same location?

I know millsc used a pickle fork, and I wonder if a "meat fork" like we use in the deli has strong enough tongs? I may have to do a little experiment!
