WELL I snapped a belt today, after I changed the belt, It will not change drive ratios anymore, after I took the cover back off, I seen that my clutch is in pieces. the metal part of two of the pads completely broke in half.. so.... Im guessing I need to replace the clutch??? is that all?? what do I need to get, and how crazy is it to do by myself.. im am pretty knowledgable, but I havent done this actually before... I tried to take a clutch off of an old scooter once before, and it was damn impossible to get the nut off of the bell housing.I mean I even went so far as to jam a metal bar in the rear wheel to stop it from moving, and all it did was bend the damn rim and the nut STILL never even budged! ... HELP!! Hopefully this one wont be like that right?!?! this is my only transportation! and I need it to get to work!

Clutches are not that hard to change, but you should use either an impact wrench or have a friend apply the brake while getting the nut free. I prefer the impact wrench route. They are avaliable from Harbor Frieght for about 50 bucks if you don't catch a sale... cheaper if you do and they are well worth it.

ok, I am just freaking out because of that one I tried to take off before didnt work... I held the brake as hard as I could and if I tried with all my might, it would just spin the wheel, and the nut never came off... Like I said, I literally bent the rim all to trying to get that damn nut off, and its still on there lol.. It wasnt from lack of force let me tell you. But im just worried, that afte rI change the clutch... will it change ratios then? I mean the spring doesnt seem broke or anything... is that all connected with a new clutch??? does it come with all that?? or does it stay in there and I just use it again?

What has happened, is the wieghts in the variator are jammed. (that's the front pulley) and missaligned. You will need to take the variator off, flip it over and put the rollers back in place... put it back together and when you reasemple it, make sure the variator is closed all the way (you will see what I mean when you tear it apart, put it back together)... The clutch was damaged from the belt, the variator wieghts like to jam when you shread a belt as well. I'll see if I can dig up a video or two when I get home. What size bike is it? Also, are you sure you have the correct sized belt on the bike?

omg! I totally forgot about the damn weights flipping around when you break A belt! this happened before, I should have damn knew that... but no, the belt didnt break my clutch, it has been on the verge on death for a while now, it was already broke in a place and has been vibrating for a couple months now, I guess it finally decided to fall apart.. Im not really sure what caused the belt to break however...

Could someone please advise me as to whether or not I have to change out the spring (Contra-Spring?) as well... Or does it come with a new clutch when you buy one??? Or can I just change the clutch by itself, and not even have to mess with all that? Thanks for any help/advice.

if you do not get an impact gun your asking for trouble . Changing roller weights do not require spring change . I imagine your looking for some more bottom end power (take off) .

Buy a whole new Clutch Assembly and you do not have to take anything apart, just take the nut off pull the old Assembly out and slide in the new one put the nut back on and your done. You can play around with the old in your spare time Alleyoop

That's all well and good, but it sounds to me like he can't even get the first nut (on the clutch drum) loose to begin with. I ran into the same trouble when I did my clutch a few weeks back. I tried all sorts of bulliferications to jam the drum so I could get the leverage to break the nut loose. Even a 2 foot long, 1/2" drive breaker bar wouldn't budge it, so I finally caved and bought an impact. I STILL had to heat the nut/chill the stud even with the impact, and even then the impact almost didn't get it loose. If the impact hadn't done the trick, I would have busted out the Dremel with a cutoff wheel and a cold chisel!

definitely save yourself the headache and buy or borrow an impact wrench. i bought an electric 230ft/lb. impact from harbor freight for $50 and still couldn't remove that nut. took it back and bought a 330ft/lb cordless impact wrench for a ton more money. still struggled a little but managed to get it off.
seriously thought about returning it after since it was way more money than i wanted to spend but i friggin <3 my impact wrench. i won't ever be without one again.

Yes, get am impact wrench if your going to own and ride a scooter for a long time. It will also be needed to take the Variator off and when a car comes into play you can also use it there so it is a good investment and will save a lot of headaches. But do not make the mistake of getting a wimpy impact wrench just to save a few bucks, get one over 200ft lb torque otherwise you will still have troubles in river city . Alleyoop

Check Autozone....they sometimes rent tools for free....seems odd but they do. You have to pay up front then you get your money back. Maybe they have impact drivers....

Thanks everyone! Especially Alleypoop.. Youre the only one who actually understood what I need to know and answered it lol... as for the others.. No offense intended, I appreciate the effort. But no I havent struggled with this nut yet. The one I was talking about was on an old scooter that I had tried to cannibalize parts off of a few months ago. I am DEFINETLY going to check about that tool rental from auto zone, because I am one broke white boy at this moment!
