Hello all, I am planning on doing a bbk this spring, but had a quick question. I know when you do the bbk you have to put in a bigger jet but is there a size when just up jetting isn't enough? I'm thinking of doing a 50 mm bbk but have seen the 52 mm kits. With the 52 would I need a new carb ? -Thanks everyone, E.J.

Most 50s have a sealed carb so its best to replace it anyways with one you can fully tune . You can go up a lil and be fine with some trial and error on jets but too big is overkill and will hurt your performance . I would get a matching head instead of reusing the 40mm head

The carb I have now is not sealed so I can adjust it when the time comes. So you all think just stick with the stock carb and just up jet?

I ordered a carb off ebay that was pre-upjetted in hopes that it would increase my top end (it didn't) but also just to have a backup carb because of shipping times. Except for tires, I've got a replacement for about every ride-stopping item because I can't stand not riding. My upjetted carb was like $30 shipped (we're not talking super-high quality here, but it works).

no bigger than 24mm the 26mm does not work with 50 or 52mm i tried it, the 24mm will work with the 50mm and 52mm i have one of each. The bigger carb is way harder to tune but once you get it tuned it works well if matched with a 50mm kit or 52mm. No need to run the 24mm carb if your not running a big valve head, uni, and performance exhaust.

What size is stock? So if I'm just doing a bbk and a9 cam right now the stock carb up jetted should be fine? And eventually would adding a bigger carb add any performance?

stock carb is usually 18mm it will work fine with a bbk and a9 cam, i didn't get the 24mm carb until i got the big valve head. No need for a bigger carb without a ported head with bigger valves.

Some of the kits I'm looking at have the bigger head. Would I still be ok with stock and only need to upgrade for more performance later on if I wanted?
This is one kit I found and thought for the price its worth a shot.

its not the size of the head cut out, its the size of the valves im talking about, you can have a 50mm head and it will have small valves. You need a big valve head, i will be doing a review in a few days on my big valve head i have on the way to show what i mean.

Unless you get a head with oversize valves no need for a bigger carb. To many people buy a bigger carb and have a heck of a time trying to tune it. Bigger carbs have bigger Venturis and your intake can only take so much gulps of air and fuel. The air turbulence created by a bigger carb due to a smaller intake restriction creates lots of problems. Alleyoop
