Well I won't be riding my scooter any time soon. Not that I would be anyway with all the snow we recently got. I drove to work this past Thursday, stepped out of my car and started to walk towards the front of the building. I slipped on some ice that I didn't see, fell down and snapped my fibula bone in half as well as damaging all of the ligaments. I am in a boot with crutches right now and I go to the orthopedic surgeon this Wednesday to see if I need surgery. So far all of the other doctors that have seen me are in the opinion that surgery is needed because the gap between the broken is too wide to properly heal on it's own. Needless to say, this will make for an interesting Christmas for me. Luckily I am already finished my gift shopping.

Oh man , sorry to hear about this, sounds like there will be surgery in your future. Hopefully it gets done in a timely fashion and you can be riding by spring . Good luck, take your meds and make sure to do any pt they recommend. Dan.

thanks FlyAngler...the doctor's office just called me and bumped my appointment up to tomorrow instead of Wednesday, so I will find out tomorrow morning if surgery is the next step. I will allow them to operate today if it meant healing faster and getting rid of this constant throbbing in my ankle.

Oh man that bites.
What did the dr say yest? Is it surgery, or just lots of pt?
Here's what I've learned--follow the dr's instructions to the letter. If he tells you not one step without the boot, the don't you even get out of bed without the boot.
My last appt from having toe surgery (had to cut the bone and shorten it so it fit in line like it should), the dr commented he was impressed with how well my toe had healed. I told him I followed every instruction completely. I remember he sort of bobbed his head and blinked, then asked "Really?" I was like "Why wouldn't I? Why spend that much money to get it fixed, only to ignore what you told me to help the healing?" Apparently most folks start feeling better so start doing whatever they feel like rather than what the dr told them to do.
Heal fast, Jim! And I hope your pain isn't too awful.

Get well soon!
If you are a smoker cutting back or quitting may help speed up your recovery too.
Don't be macho and do listen to the Doc. A lot of complications may be nipped in the bud if we actually tell the doctor how we feel instead of being afraid of seeming less macho for saying it hurts worse than it should.

Sorry that I haven't replied sooner. I have been rather busy visiting the orthopedic surgeons office. The end result is that I will be having surgery this coming Monday to install a metal plate and screws. They will also be repairing the torn ligaments as well. The surgeon said that the gap between the bones is just too big and it would take about 4 months to heal on it's own. With the surgery he said that he could have me walking again in 3 to 4 weeks. So surgery it is. Thanks for all the well wishes.

Update: The surgery went very well however the surgeon discovered that the damage was rather extensive. While there was no ligament damage, the bone (fibula) was not only broken but splintered as well. They decided to go with a metal rod instead of a plate. I am at home resting comfortably (thanks to some good pain meds). I am scheduled to see the doctors on Monday for my post op check up. I assume the stitches will come out at this time. Thanks for all the well wishes !!!

Jim, saying prayers for a speedy recovery for you. I've had three knee-scopes, two cubital/carpal tunnels, one carpal, and the one toe-bone thing. Trust me that it gets really old really fast to just sit and heal. But you follow your dr's and pt's orders. Follow them completely. That's really the best way to heal the fastest way.
Does he have you on Tylenol 3? That codeine is good stuff, you know....

SylvreKat,
I have both Percocet and Vicaden that the doctors prescribed for me. I am slowly weaning myself off of these as I plan on going back to work on Monday and I can't drive while on them. They are also highly addictive so I want to get off of them ASAP. I am right now mostly taking over the counter Extra Strength Tylenol and it is working well. The mornings are the worse. When I get out of bed all of the blood rush to my ankle and its hurts like .

Just don't take too much of the Tyl. Even over the counter isn't totally safe. I forget, I think it's the liver it can damage if you take too much for too long.
My dr told me no more than five total extra strength a day. But I try to keep it at just the two in the morn, unless the bad knee or the knee formerly known as the good knee are having a particularly bad day of pain.
Ask your dr if there's something safer than that duo yet stronger than the Tyl. 'Cause going straight from the big guns to regular stuff probably isn't the best thing for your pain management. Although I agree with you that staying on those two isn't the best thing, either.
Oh, here's another thought. There's anti-inflamatory cream. I'm on Voltaren gel. Rub it right on my knees. Seems to help--at least it doesn't hurt any worse than when I don't use it. Like I tell my dr, how do you really know if it helps or not? Maybe if I didn't use it, my pain would be worse. Then again, maybe not. It might be worth asking your dr about. Or else maybe there's a pain cream you can use instead of the pills. Anything that applies directly on the hurt is better than what goes through your stomach and throughout your entire system (less potential for side effects like knocking you out)
And don't push returning to work too fast. I know, you'll need the money to offset the costs. But if you go too soon, you might cause new injury. Unless you can stay mostly off that leg.... After my toe, my dr made me stay home three weeks after finding out I had enough vacation to cover it. Then made me sit at work for I think several more weeks. Which my boss and all my coworkers helped me with, since being customer service at a copy center I'm normally on my feet the entire time. Like I said, I did my best to stick to dr's orders. And my toe healed great because I did.
Okay, lecturing done. Sorry 'bout that. I just understand what you're going through, and am trying to share from my own excessive history with surgeries etc.

SylvreKat,
Please feel free to give me all the advice you want as I can use it. I am work right now (eating my lunch in my office). Luckily I am sales manager and I usually just sit at my desk and talk to my customer on the phone or via e-mail so I don't have to walk around that much. Also since I fell on the ice at work, everything is paid for by workman's comp. so that is one less thing I have to worry about. I will look into the cream...this sounds like it might work well for me. I am down to 4 of the Extra Strength Tylenols per day.
