No choice but to buy a helmet now. My Optometrist MILF says that I have to wear glasses if I'm in control of any vehicle now. The helmet will keep the glasses from moving any.

Hot Flash! You are going to die. Really! All you can do is enjoy life while you can. The most selfish thing a person can do is force people to continue living. When in 1992 California they passed the mandatory helmet law, and 40% of motorcyclists quit riding -- it was not worth riding if they cannot feel the breeze, feel and breathe the cool fresh air. You may enjoy riding with a four pound helmet, I do not. I am currently NOT enjoying riding, but it is better than being locked up in a cage. Life is enjoyable when I cross the State line and can get rid of the damn helmet. "The most selfish thing a person can do is force people to continue living."I'm not about forcing people to do anything. I'm not a government restrictions guy....Freedom means less government intrusion. My comment had nothing to do with the word "force". My comment had to do with the word "selfish." It's not about you. It's the people who truly care about you who are the most affected. For example, many people decide to stop smoking or lose weight in order to get in better health. They do this not because they don't enjoy smoking or eating,....they do! They're willing to make the sacrifice of their own feelings and put the feelings of their loved ones ahead of their own. I admit, I don't know your case individually, But, most people who choose not to wear a helmet its safe to say they're making their loved ones more worried about them as they choose to place their own safety at more risk, and care less about their loved ones feelings. Why should they/you care about the feelings of their loved ones? The "breeze" is more important. If they're forced to take care of you/them for the many years following the accident they/you didn’t plan on having, that's just the risk they'll going to have to live with. The fact that they/you show them you don't care about their feelings that they might one day be left with wiping your butt hole and feeding you baby food. Imo it's extremely selfish thinking. It has nothing at all to do with being "forced" to wear a helmet. Just my 2 cents 40 percent of Cali. riders stopped riding because of a helmet usage law? Those were not riders, they were poseurs. www.merriam-webster.com/dictionary/poseur

stupid forum! How do I delete my reply? Upper right corner of your post is an edit button. Remove everything from the post, add a word like deleted and save the changes. Walla! The post is gone, more or less.

One problem is however,.....if your quote is one that someone else decides to block-quote....there's no getting rid of it. Besides, deleting a post after others have responded to it, is just not right.

What an interesting thread, reading all the pro's and con's of wearing a helmet or not to wear a helmet.. What I find the most interesting is many of us have came from the older scootdawg website, so many of you over the years have posted near misses by people on cell phones, or drivers doing stupid things that forced a maneuver from you to get out of anothers vehicles way..
Then turn around here in this thread and list the many reasons why you don't like to wear a helmet, yet in your writings you omit your previous near misses in the past..... Here's my 2 cents, and we all know 2 cents ain't worth much now days, won't even buy a stick of gum any more, but here it goes..
I believe in helmets, there are many many different type's full face, half face, beanies, just to name a few, All will offer more protection than none at all.. We all know car drivers don't see us, they can't stay away from their cell phones, and are quite willing to risk your life to send a text of no real importants.. So we all know the dangers exist, yet you refuse to wear any protection... I don't agree with you.. And thanks to our nations love of health care, we all are paying for your decision even if we don't want to.. Think not ? It's called a risk pool, and I don't believe it will be long before they start mandating things like dot approved helmet's, and other apparel all in the name of safety..
Think not ? well when i was 23 and flying airplanes, my work insurance tried to raise my rates because they considered flying risky hobby, At the time I told my insurance agent if he even tried to raise my rates, Id cancel them right then and there and could easily be re insured by a company that specializes in pilot's.. Needless to say I won that one.. But now days with the current laws I would be forced to either quit flying, or pay the higher rate. The risk pool will determine what we all pay, and sooner or later they will begin mandating what you will wear on your bike or you will pay more..
I believe helmets are a very important safety device to wear, but for those of you that don't wish to wear them I pray you don't have an accident, not just for your safety but so my rates within the pool don't go up... In other words now days it's not about you any more.. It's about the good of the collective.. As much as I absolutely detest this, you can bet i didn't vote for it, but that's what it's about now.. Not you..

If I'm at a shopping plaza and I am stopping at a few stores, I may choose not to wear a helmet in between stores and parking lots. No big deal.

People are going to do what they are going to do, seldom do we ever change ones mind once it's made up... On that note i will say I sure hope and pray for every ones safety... Good luck

I live in Australia, and all our states and territories have a mandatory helmet law. I must say that I would wear a helmet regardless of whether it was law or not, as a mouth full of bug guts just ruins anyones day! (So does a fractured skull, or broken jaw!!!)

OK, trust me, the "bug thing" can happen to you regardless of a helmet... LOL!
Back in 1972, I felt "the need for speed" one time, and traded my snail-speed Harley Electra-Glide with my pal for his Ducati Darmah for the night... I was wearing a period Bell helmet (but of course, no mouth-area coverage...)... Well, just blocks from my house, I was enjoying the night air, and YAWNED... BIG mistake...
I swallowed a big hornet which promptly stung the back of my throat, and got me again on my tongue as I frantically coughed and spit him out. (I don't think the dang bug even got injured!) Doggone thing is probably still buzzing around my old house in Illinois... My throat and tongue swelled up so bad that I nearly choked to death. THAT was some of the WORST pain I've ever experienced.
I still prefer a simple, comfortable, old-school helmet, BUT... I learned to keep my mouth shut. (At least while riding...) After THAT experience, AND almost killing myself in a face-plant while pushing a guy's Harley, I have decided that EVERYTHING about motorcycles truly IS dangerous... Everything, at least... EXCEPT riding them... LOL!
Lesson learned!

I could be wrong about this but, I have the impression that those riders who choose the feel of the wind rather than wearing a helmet, believe that they are such good riders they think they're not going to get into an accident. The problem with that is, they're forced to share the road with not so good drivers and riders. At any given time anything, including a YAWN can be dangerous. Thanks for sharing Leo. Anytime, I feel a yawn coming on, I'll be sure to remember your story.
Pride comes before the fall....;-)

Common sense and paying attention to your surrounding are the two things that will keep you safe.

Common sense and paying attention to your surrounding are the two things that will keep you safe. Well it certainly helps, but helmet or not, shouldn't you still be doing that ?
