My bike is a Roketa Fiji 150cc. So I was riding the other day on my way home from work. I'm going WOT 50mph and I notice the RPMs are waving between 9000-10,000. (normal at WOT for my bike is a little under 8000) I figure whatever, the gauge must be broken, I'll check it later.
So I'm getting to about the half way point and suddenly the bike is strongly hesitating, almost feels like its starving for air or fuel, backfires and all. So as this is happening, I look down to my RPMs and its waving in the 10,000-11,000 mark. The engine does not seem to sound like its running that fast either. This continues for awhile until I'm basicly unable to go over 10MPH without the rpms skyrocketing.
So I'm headed home, so as I basicly can, but suddenly the rpms jump down to normal range and I can speed up to 25mph. Go higher and it starts all over again, this time the rpms max out until I let off the throttle. Again, rpms go normal and I can speed up again. And it keeps jumping back and forth like this until I get home.
The issue is fully reproducable. Its fine to start but once I get into higher speeds it'll repeat.
Does anybody have any idea what could possibly be causing this?!

Well I have to ask are the RPMS of the MOTOR really going that high? I mean even at 8000 rpms on a 150 the motor is screaming let alone at over 9000 rpms. You should be able to hear the difference right away. If your able to get up to the same speeds as before then I would say the tach is bad.
But if it backfires and RPMS drop that means it is running LEAN and then I would say your CDI is the problem. Alleyoop

Either what Alley said or the clutch is getting jambed up with belt bits causing sticking and overheating of the clutch. How many miles are on the bike?

...then I would say your CDI is the problem. Alleyoop the CDI would be my guess also. my tachometer went crazy awhile ago similar to what you're experiencing. i had a spare CDI, replaced it and problem was solved.

No, The motor doesnt really sound like its going that fast. I'm not able to get up to speed either. Everytime the issue pops up the bike severely brakes/slows down. Almost as if I let go of the throttle completely. It'll keep trying, but also keep slowing down.(like accelerate, slow down, accelerate, slow down, accelerate, slow down, until i stops doing it around 15mph.)
When it backfires/burps/chokes the rpms still stay in the 10,000s.
Rockynv: I opened up the CVT cover and see no issues. Belt is fine, and very very little black dust. Miles on the bike 3200.
I got the bike when it was at 1600 miles. Between there and now I have not had to change anything.(except oil of course)

With those miles I think your roller weights are really flat and now lost a lot of the material and will cause high rpms and not push the belt up high on the variator. Just looking at it is not good enough TAKE the Variator off and check the weights. I will bet they have big flat spots on them. Alleyoop

Ok, I'll check that next then. What tools are needed to remove it?

The best is to get an IMPACT WRENCH, you will also need It if you every want to take the clutch off. Many try to hold the Crank from turning by wedging something in between the fan blades and just using a wrench but they usually wind up breaking one of the fins on the Fan. Alleyoop

I have that Harbor Freight 12v impact wrench. It works great! Two to three whacks, and the variator nut spins right off.

Ok, so i started it up and let it idle for awhile. A few minutes of idleing and the rpms started going up again. then it calmed down. Few seconds pass and rpms going up, lights start fading, engine chokes and dies.
At this point i remove the cdi and then put it back in. Haven't been able to reproduce it yet. Probably going to have to take it out for a ride.

Guys, my advice for selecting an impact wrenches just go to the Home Depot. I bought a 20 V electric plug in impact wrench for $169 plus tax. It has done it's job very well and removing the clutch and variator nuts

It has done it's job very well and removing the clutch and variator nuts If you need it for other (bigger) projects, I could see purchasing that one at Home Depot. If you just need it for your variator and clutch on your scooter, I wouldn't spend more than 5x the price of the Harbor Freight one ($30). The HF impact wrench works great for scooter maintenance, and can be run off your scooter's battery. I keep mine in my seat, with a spare belt strapped to the frame, so I will never be stranded by a belt issue on the side of the road!
