Seems to me that as long as they didn't portray it to be a Vespa, or a Piaggo, and still claimed it to be in it's own right, then W T F?
So, if my girlfriend wears a dress that closely resembles one my wife wears, ........................ok, bad example.
Anyway, it wasn't a Chinese clone with a Vespa nameplate on it, so W T F?

I can tell even though half that guys face is cut off on the left he is of "Oriental" decent lol...prolly not a good idea to be standing next to the clone lol! Then again if you're gona copy domething copy something attractive. Who goes into the plastic surgeons office and says "can you make me look like this?"  |

The funny thing is, Piaggio is now in a partnership with a Chinese manufacturer (Zongshen) to turn out scooters....are they knockoffs as well?

Producing under license is quite a bit different than copying without permission. I personally don't know how they get away with blatant copying like they do. It would tick me off if I went through all that is necessary to design a bike and someone stole that design packed the hidden bits with cheapness and sold it for pennies on the dollar compared to my well engineered fine machine. Not sure how one could side with the thieves. I hope the Italians keep it up.

howdy, i'm back from exile while my computer was allegedly being repaired. they finally said it was toast and I bought a new one which is all windows 8 and I can't even figure anything. I do get tired of the good looking knock-offs with the cheaper parts and materials that just don't work for long.

I got a kick out of how they even included a modification/variation of the Piaggio Blue Logo on the front of the knockoffs.
Zongshen was heavilly mentored by Piaggio and had to do some serious upgrades to their process to get where they are. Piaggio maintains a full time team in China overseeing whats being produced there too however Zongshen is not producing bikes using Piaggio engineering for anyone other than Piaggio. They are however using what they learned from Piaggio to make better GY6 bikes and others of their own design. There was a sudden jump in quality in their own offerings when they started to apply what they learned from Piaggio. I saw some of the new Zongshen bikes at a local dealer and they are better now however none had Piaggio Master or Legend engines in them or anything close to a knockoff of them.
I can understand Piaggio's being very wary of others trying to capitalize on their designs or partnership with Zongshen by making too close a knockoff at least cosmetically lest cosumers mistake those bikes as collaborative or authorised products who's poor quality underneath could undermine the perception of quality that people have of the real Piaggio products.

We just have to come to terms with everything being made in China. They seized the moment and took over manufacturing. They now have the largest economy.... This goes beyond scooters. If they fail to produce quality anything then people will stop buying anything made by them. Walmart the worlds largest employer sells Chinese made products. China the largest populated country so that facilitated a lot of the growth here. I really dont care who makes my stuff as long as it has value. The corner they have painted themselves into is how do they one day charge 2000.00 for a China made scooter once the consensus reaches the point they have reached and surpassed others in quality? That day will be when they take these beautiful modern sculpted designs and make it into a turn key vehicle. Then they will get my 2000.00. You can already see some of these manufacturers taking an interest in separating themselves from the others and now we have competition within the Chinese market and this only helps us more.

The chinese bikes have gotten better and better every year. And finding parts is easy for most of them. Compare this to looking for parts for a Honda or a Kawasaki, or Harley motorcycle.
As for Zongshen, I've only seen one bike in person made by them. It was a 250gs. it's a 250cc thumper motorcycle. It looked like a miniature Honda CB650. It was well built and beautiful. If Zongshen get's into bigger bikes and can turn out the quality of what I saw, and they manage to make it reliable and get a good parts, dealer network going, they could give Honda, Yamaha, Suzuki, and Kawasaki a run for their money.

You don't have to think back too far To recall when Harley Davidson was going through much of the same ordeal with japanese manufacturers. They even went so far as to patent the harley sound. Remember the saying-"imitation is the best form of flattery". If the chinese could pull off a knockoff of comperable quality at a fraction of the price, Piaggio would have something to worry about. Until then, they are safe.Anybody in the know would go for the "real deal" as opposed to a fake. The chinese fake rolexes too, but I don't see the swiss worried.  |

So the Italians shouldn't enforce their laws because it wasn't a "good" copy? If the manufacturers broke the law they have to answer to authorities we aren't on the jury...

The chinese are notorious for ripping off designs.... China is a huge copy machine.... It doesn't surprise me that the Italians would go after them nor, do I blame them.
BTW Scootnwinn, it's good to see you online. How ya feeling?
