Hello, I recently was given a nonworking scooter and am trying to fix it up. From what I know its a 2005 UM X-peed 50cc. The person who gave it to me says the motor wont turn over and maybe seized. I took it apart last night and discovered it was not seized, but it is very hard to turn. The top of the piston and the cylendar walls look good, but what concerned me was the starter gears and possbily the crank shaft bearings. My first question is, what model is this motor, and secondly how does the starter gearing work? I can see the starter gear does not retract, but is there a gear that is supposed spin or retact, or does it stay engaged? Thanks for the help!!

I'm not real familiar with all the various types of scooter 2 stroke engines. ( yours is a 2-stroke. ) On a 4-stroke gy6 based scooter the gears are always engaged, the starter gear has a one way clutch in it. By turning the engine over backwards by hand the starter should turn. ( the starter gearing will make the engine hard to turn. you may be able to hear or feel the starter armature spin. ) Turning the engine over by hand in the direction it normally runs the starter clutch should freewheel. ( it'll be easier to turn in this direction due to not turning the starter also.)

I think your correct with the 1E40QMB engine. Ill try moving the flywheel different directions and see if that one way gear engages and disengages. That may be my problem, if not it may be crankcase bearings.

Looks like a Minarelli. The design has been around forever. Parts are easy to come by. Also looks very dry dry rusty dry. How long since it has been run? Was the motor sealed up when you got it? Or was the head already off? 2-strokes are dry sump. If they are left open for an extended period the crank bearings dry out and rust quickly. May also be the one way starter clutch. The little roller bearings in it may have set up. I'd continue to pull off all the external accessories until you're down to just the crank and then see where you stand. I rebuilt two and other than a standard flywheel puller the only special tool I needed was to push the crank out of the case and I was able to rent a tool at the local rental place. here is another motor manual--> dl.dropboxusercontent.com/u/6396327/50cc%20Motor%20Manual.pdf
