Am I maxing out my existing variator? How do I tell? Before I go throwing parts at it I need to know where I stand today. Is it something empirical I can measure? Or is it something you have to tell by feel and behavior? The variator outside diameter is 117mm, but the outer half with the fan fins is only 112mm. I've got 14 gram Dr Pulley sliders. The scoot accelerates well but has lackluster top speed. It is running at 50-55 indicated and 8300-8500rpm It's a Lance/Znen 150 with 12" wheels.

Hard to tell like that. If the variator plates are touching each other before the belt is all the way up on the variator, it might be you're maxed out.

So how do I tell? Squish it together and see where the belt rides? Rev it up with the cover off to see what's happening?

Use black marker. Draw a line on the face and see where the wear stops after a few miles

From the pics you can see the belt is not all the way up the variator, there is a reason for that, but which one? Either your belt is worn, too thin, the variator plates touch each other before the belt is at the top (in which case you may want to look at a performance variator), or the gearing is limited because of the rear pulley.

Your belt will only ride as far as the varaitor and drive face will allow so it will only ride to 112mm measure the marks if its 112mm or close to that you are maxing the belt travel

The belt is not getting to the outer edge. Too short or worn too narrow. It is possible that the variator is not able to close all the way due to the sliders not being tall enough or sticking. Also clutch sheeve could be sticking and not closing all the way.

Argh! Weights, springs, belts! So many ways to go. It's all voodoo I tell ya!
I've got one more stone to turn over before I have the whole picture. One of the many stories the DSPO told me was that they put different gears in the scoot. I would disregard the story except that there are globs of red RTV around the gearbox seam. I'll have to pop the cover and find out what they actually did.
