If so, which one?
during the 3 mile walk home the other day after my belt snapped again I decided it was time to get a small, cordless impact driver that I can keep with me. I had a belt, with no way to change it in a parking lot. I do most of my work at my shop with an air compressor.
anyways im looking to see if you guys have some experience with certain models. im gonna need something with some b@lls, to make sure it will work when I need it to, but would still like something pretty compact. ive been looking at the Milwaukee 2451-22, nice and small with a 3/8 drive, but lacking with only about 83 ft/lbf. don't know if it would break a variator bolt every time...
what do you guys use?

Don't carry one, but you do need one that pumps out at least 200ft lbs. Alleyoop

I have the one from that connects to a battery also, but i always use my truck batt because i don't want to drain my scooter battery.
If you are just changing the cvt belt you don't need an impact... just compress the outer clutch plate so the belt can drop down lower into the clutch, then carefully rotate and move the belt over the variator... that's how i change my belt.

I got the one from Harbor Freight too. I really didn't think it would do the job (it was an impossible nut) Boy was I WRONG. That nut fairly flew off! (I apologized to my little "wrench that could" and gave it a kiss when I was done!)

My dad bought me a cordless impact from, I think, Harbor Freight. It's junk, I felt bad about it, too. I asked for it for my bday, or Christmas. Maybe it was defective, but it barely took the CVT bolts off.

i have no probs with my craftsman impact driver, and fairly certain it has less umph than what you are looking at. sometimes the factory nuts are too tight for the little guys and too tight period. get it off first then put it back on with your new one. they do not need to be cranked the out of. meaning you don't keep impacting once it starts to impact, just a two-three short (second or so) pulls of the trigger and that's it. i have not had one single problem this way

As T150 mentioned above, I just spread the rear pulley and push the belt down to hold it apart and the belt will slip right over the variator. Very simple and easy.

If it's a 150cc, you can make a variator holding tool for cheap. If it's a 50cc, you can buy a holder plate for cheap that bolts to the case and holds the teeth on the outer face. I could do the ez-change trick to my 150, but not the 50.

PS - those little 3/8 drive battery powered guns are AWESOME for taking out body screws (time savings) and would probably get most any bolt on a scooter that isn't stripped. Except... the variator and clutch nuts. They are great to have anyway, but make sure you get one with TWO Lithium Ion batteries. There are lots of older ones with Ni-Cad batteries selling for cheap out there. I have the Snap-On version of the one linked I use at work, and I kiss it every time I use it! It almost fits in your pocket, and I'm impressed with what it can do.

I was at PepBoys last night looking for a tool which they didn't have, but the guy helping told me they just opened a Harbor Freight a mile from my house! I scooted over there this morning and picked up one of the emergency 12v impact wrenches. I got home, took off my battery cover and CVT covers, hooked up the impact wrench to the battery, and took my variator off in three pulses. Wired a cigarette socket to my battery, and put in under the helmet strap hook on the steering collumn. The impact wrench fits in the seat compartment easily, so I'll never be worried about busting a belt on the road again.
