Hey everyone,
I just picked up a 2007 Jonway YY50QT-6 scooter. Body was pretty trashed, so I am ordering all new plastics. (Side note - Anyone know of a good source for these?) I cleaned out the carb and it seems to kick start perfectly fine. All electronics work fine as it is running. It will not electric start though. I tested the battery and it was dead.... no voltage.
I am planning on ordering a new one, but I also wanted to test the charging system. Are there any guides on how to test this while it is still in the scoot?
The reason I want to test that, is when it is running, if I turn the turn signal on, the fuel gauge will drop on the dash. Also if I flip high beams on, it will drop as well. I just want to make sure that I have a fully operating charging system for the new battery and that it will not also go dead. (I realize these batteries can be charged, but I do not currently have one)
:TLDR: Just purchased a Jonway YY50QT-6, Need a source for plastic fairings, how to test charging system when in scooter.
Thanks! ;D

Welcome....
What is the voltage at the battery with the scoot off and then when it is running? If the charging system is working you will have over 12v while the scooter is running..... If I recall ~13.5v-15.5v @ 0.5amp indicating it is charging.
I am sure someone will chime in with more specifics.

CHARGING STATUS INSPECTION • Install the fully charged battery; not sure how it will test with a dead battery.... • Connect the voltmeter between the binding posts of the battery. • Start the engine, and accelerate slowly; easure the charging voltage and current. Charging voltage (V) 13.5 ~ 15.5 Charging current (A) 0.5 *Measuring condition: 5000rpm If the voltage is not in the range of the above-specified value, inspect the voltage regulator.

howdy, i just don't get entirely what is going on. the battery was dead but you started it with a foot crank? then tested the things you mentioned?
if the battery was totally dead and you started it even by jump start, the battery is still dead. i would guess that all the charging output is going to the battery leaving little for the rest of the electronice. thus the diminishment when you turn brake light etc on and voltage drops so the anomalies you describe happen. i would suspect that if the battery were fully charged, you would not notice those anomalies. the battery may have a dead cell which is eating all the input. or there is no electrolyte to facilitate the charge. as stated above, with engine off the battery should read 12.7 volts across the terminals and running the voltage should be in excess of 13 when the engine rpm is above idle. if the battery is not functional all the test info is useless. buy the new battery charged up or get this one charged somehow. then make the tests.
lotsa miles and smiles to ya ken

[replyingto=shalomrider]shalomrider[/replyingto]Thanks to everyone that has replied thus far! I can kickstart it and everything seems to work (except the horn). There are the apparent voltage drops (fuel gauge moving) as I turn stuff on (turn signal, brake light, high beams). I tested the battery (off the scooter) after riding around for a bit and the battery showed no voltage. I assume that the battery is shot, but I wanted to make sure that the regulator was putting out enough voltage to even charge it in the first place, due to those anomalies. Also.... any ideas on where to get plastics for the rear?

UPDATE: Tested the terminals.... got a peak of 8 volts. I am going to assume this is a draw due to the dead battery. New battery is on the way, and I will be able to test and figure out exactly what is going on..... I hope.... lol

[replyingto=hornet]hornet[/replyingto]batterys on scoots are just like a car battery they have a cranking charge to that needs to be strong to turn the scoot over thats the frist to go on batterys.if thats dead so is the battery.
