I've got a problem on my wife's Schwinn Graduate 150. At idle, it surges. you have to hold the brakes to keep it in place. Then when you do give it throttle, it jumps off the line. I rode WOT, so it never bothered me, but she's started riding again and the lack of smooth throttle modulation bothers her. I lowered the idle speed and now it just dies at stops. I assume my problem lies in the clutch. Before I tear into the CVT (never done it before, but kinda understand the principle) is there anything specific I should look for? It's her bike so I have to do it right the first time - or she'll just say it's trashed. and want a new scooter. I'll be diving into it tomorrow afternoon, so I'd really appreciate any suggestions before I open it up. The bike has 1200 miles on it.

From the way you describe the problem someone set the idle high so it would not die. That causes the jumping when starting. If the wheel is spinning on the center stand the idle is to high. It should idle around 1500-1800 rpms. If you lower the idle to around those numbers and the rear wheel is spinning pretty fast then the clutch is not releasing. But if the wheel stops spinning or just turns slowly and or just wants to turn and it dies It is most likely your Valves. What happens is usually the exhaust valves tigthens up and does not seall and looses compression and they will not hold low rpms. They will die coming to stops and you have to keep on giving it throttle to keep it running.
So I would suggestion to first adjust the valves I set both of mine to .004 inchs. Then if it still has a problem adjust the Fuel Ratio mixture. Alleyoop

It also just might be the throtle adjustment. you may have to adjust the big bold next to the carb on the throtle cable.

;o I'll check the valves first. I hadn't thought of that, but it makes sense. It first started doing this after I had a scooter shop clean the carb after it sat for a couple of years w/o being used. When I picked it up, it was idling faster than before. That's been at least 4 years ago and I just ride the scooter every few months to keep the fuel from gumming up again. On the center stand the rear wheel is always turning - even after I lowered the idle. No tach, but it sounds about right. I haven't checked valves since the 70's. I wonder if it's like riding a bicycle?

I hope so. She rode a Vino a few weeks ago and wants one. I can't see going from a 150 to a 50 (and paying good money to do so). She's 5' and with most seats 30" or higher, her options are limited.
