Hi,
After sorting out the fuel issues on my velo, I seem to get a nasty vibration at 45km/h. Could this be a drive belt issue?

Could be , also tire , could be many things . Where are you feeling the vibration from? What kind of vibration is it ? Can you replicate it when on the center stand ? More info please.

Hi,
The Vibration seems to start when I reach about 25km/h. Then as you go along it sounds like a revolving droning noise. The scooter won't advance past 45km/h although it seems to want to push on, but feels as though it has reached it's limit and is being held back. It seems to be enimating from the engine area, but you feel it right up through the handlebars. I recently swapped out the exhaust for a standard replacement, but I was slightly concerned when the packaging referred to a 4 stroke rather than a 2 stroke. If fitted ok, and I was asuured it was ok, but could this also be the cause? I understand that 2 stroke exhausts need an expansion chamber. This one does have one, so I'm assuming it should be ok. The other thing I have recently fitted was a compact air filter, removing the standard one. Regards. HH.

If the vibration started after the exhaust installation it could be the exhaust resonating more than the old heavy stock one . Could also be that the bolts attaching it to the scoot are too long and although you may have them buried or seated the shank could be to long and the pipe is not fully seated against the scoot . I had accidentally swapped my two bolts on my muffler , one was longer than the other . Vibration started the same way . Didn't realize it till the mount that had the too long bolt dot deformed and the other one that took all the stress cracked the mount on the muffler.....getting a new muffler now on order. If the vibration was there before the new muffler could be a stuck roller in the variator or could be the belt . Is the belt the original ? How many miles on it ?

Oh also do you have an exhaust gasket on it . That took out a nagging vibration big time when I put one on mine.

You may also want to check for a groove in the drive faces of your variator. You can get grooves from riding at one constant speed and the belt will catch and drone along vibrating as it fights to skip out of the groove and then back in again. Some time a kevlar belt with a raw edge can cut a groove in very short time.
You usually check for the grooving with a metal straight edge and if its not too bad can dress it out with a flat file if your carfull to evenly work your way around. Most times your better off just replacing the variator and the belt.
Occasionally the groving can be caused by an out of place kick starter return spring.
If you have a very bad vibration it can cause muffler and rear body failure along with damage the clutch and gearbox input shaft bearings. If you find that you have belt vibration and grooving you need to check the clutch and the gearbox replacing anything thats damaged or you will continue to have problems as the clutch shaft wobbles against the new belt.

Cheap tires that are unbalanced can shimmy . I bought a TaoTao with a front tire so bad I did not get a 1/4 mile from the lot before I took it back to have it replaced . I had the tires balanced on my Echarm and it was so much smoother . Even smoother when I replaced the stock crappy tires with some Skinkos .
A worn belt as well as worn pullies can vibrate . Nuts and bolts get loose from riding so make sure all are snug on the forks , triple tree , head stem etc . I replaced the stock belts on both of my scooters with Kevlar Bandos and I noticed they both had a surging vibration that both did not have prior to replacing the belt .
