Has anyone ever rode to Sturgis South Dakota to see all the motorcycles and enjoy the shows? My wife wants to ride up there and do that. South Dakota is about 2 States away from us. My wife has a Rebel 250 and I own a Bali 250. I think they would handle the trip. Mine would need new tires, clutch and belt, roller weights. Mine has close to 7000 miles on it.

My Harley friend went several times in the past. The last couple, he said it's really gone downhill. Seemed mostly about the drinking and the trying to get away with public nudity and stuff like that. Said he doubts he'll ever go again.
A shame, 'cause he said it used to be more about sharing riding stories and comparing bikes and stuff, with some drinking and shenanigans. But mostly riders getting together to enjoy a shared love--riding.

What's made THIS Sturgis so special, is the introduction of the NEW Indian! No longer a Harley V-Twin-clone engine with "Indianesque" fenders for nearly forty grand... The NEW Indian is new from the ground up, featuring a 111 cid "Mushroom-Cylinder" vertical pushrod, PROPER, PERIOD-CORRECT Indian engine that's modern as tomorrow, yet looks like a forties' flathead. The trims are correct, the fenders, even the modern seats fit the image. The engine/tranny has over a million miles of testing. The entire bike is made here in the good old USA by Polaris. The History Channel, and renowned Indian expert, Mike Wolfe of "American Pickers" apparently are major backers. FINALLY, after DECADES of failed tries, the Indian logo adorns a PROPER modern resurrection of the great V-Twin Chief. And instead of the 35 to 40 thousand dollar price tag, the new Indian begins at under TWENTY-GRAND for the basic model, and not much more for the two upgrades. Me for the basic!print screenJust when I thought I finally had big bikes out of my blood, THIS comes along. Pix are on the fridge, and my Missus is in deep depression... LOL!THIS bike, IF it lives up to its test-results, and IF the price remains the same... THIS bike... THIS BIKE... will be Harley Davidson's WORST NIGHTMARE... As well as a nightmare for the Asian V-Twin Harley "wannabes". This is the first ride I've seen come out of a factory in 40 years that has my old blood pumping. With AMERICAN design, AMERICAN workmanship, AMERICAN Indian heritage and priced for the near-fatally-decimated Obama dollar... Long live the mighty Indian!Leo (beating the tom-tom) in Texas

A friend goes every year on his VRod, but not my thing. He says people go for nice rides in the country, but for the most part it is about drinking a ton of beer and getting women to flash their ho-hahs.
Leo, I was not with you at all until the Obama decimated dollar comment. Then you won me over. ;D

A friend goes every year on his VRod, but not my thing. He says people go for nice rides in the country, but for the most part it is about drinking a ton of beer and getting women to flash their ho-hahs. Leo, I was not with you at all until the Obama decimated dollar comment. Then you won me over. ;D THANKS, but, it's the simple truth... I won't even BEGIN to start any political debates on the site, but check the price of gold 5 or 6 years ago. It was around $750 and ounce. Now it's around $1,800 an ounce. That is the true hard, cold benchmark for how much scooter, house, jeans, cat food, etc. our dollar will buy. In 5 years, if we make the same money we did back then, we've taken at least a 50% pay cut. I didn't realize that myself until it seemed my old-age fixed-income was only buying half what it should at Wally-World. My hat is off to Indian, GM, Ford and Chrysler for biting the bullet and REALLY trying to keep a $10,000 vehicle under $20,000 to actually COMPETE with Asian goods... While America still subsidizes some Oriental cars... While it's hard for me to buy $3.50 gas, I also am VERY grateful that refiners have NOT let the price of gas rise proportionally to other necessities. If so, we'd be paying around $25.00 a gallon. While I am old enough to remember 15-cent gas, honestly, it's been over a buck a gallon since the early 1970's. To have only increased 3 or 4 times in decades, is a miracle in today's tax-and-spend insanity. I bought an 8,000 square-foot mansion in 1980 for $56,000. THAT house is now over $1.5 million. Sure glad gas didn't do that... LOL!Just my opinion, please no nasty replies. Comments here are ONLY pertinent to our rides and their affordability (or lack of...) and PLEASE note I have not trashed the offenders or any party , and I won't do that. So far, we still have the right to vote, and American voters have refused to elect those who understand free enterprise, and have the ability to return to a realistic budget.
American voters have spoken, and, both left and right, liberals and conservatives now must live with their choices, good or bad. I'm simply praising enterprises like Polaris/Indian for doing their part to help out.

Dragonsparks,
Looks like you and I may have similar thoughts about where our Constitutional Republic is heading... LO not so L...Wherever it's heading, I'd like to head there on a new Indian! While searching out the web concerning "things Indian" I came across this fabulous artist's concept for a Royal Enfield fifties/sixties' style sport bike based on the new Indian "Thunder-Stroke" V-Twin! I'm a pretty good artist, but this fellow is a regular Chip Foose! Whew, can he handle an airbrush!image hosting photobucketHow do you suppose THIS bad boy would sell in the good old USA? Mighty sweet. Appropriate, too since Royal Enfield made the last Indians (re-badged RE's) in England around 1958. How neat that a Royal Enfield might have an INDIAN engine a half-century later! I'm not sure, but I think today's RE's are made in India. I doubt that Polaris has enough of these great motors to share with other manufacturers, but this would be one slick alternative to the big touring Chief! Maybe Polaris should consider something like this, badged as a "Scout" for their first new Indian model...THIS design harkens back in character to the great Vincent, and Crocker... We all can dream, anyway!Leo (still hoping we can remove a little of the excess "Red" from the Red, White & Blue)... in Texas

Yes Oldchopperguy I think we do. And you are right about it being LO NOT So L. It just struck me Funny at how well you walked that PC tight rope in a Country where You or anyone else for that matter. I don't do PC. My Mac won't translate it. You're right that Royal Enfield is a nice looking scoot. Kind of reminds me of my old Norton Commando. The styling is very nice. Yes a nice Dream to have. Maybe some day soon people will remember what OUR Constitutional Republic stood for. Just don't hold your breath waiting for it. Truly Dave

Dragonsparks,
I don't do PC well either. My Dad was WWII Army, I was Viet Nam era Army and my Missus was Korean War Army Air Corp. We grew up in a time when "hyphenated-Americans" didn't exist. There was right and wrong, NOT right and left. I'm of mostly English and Irish descent. Can you imagine how STUPID I would sound telling an employer "I'm an English-American"? When he got done laughing, he'd growl "Well, jerk, which ARE you?... English, or AMERICAN? You sure can't be BOTH!" I agree... 'nuff said...
After hearing how Harley Davidson has been trashing the new Indian, I did some searching... Cheesh! Harley now has a major factory in INDIA! Making some of their slickest bikes... Guess THAT makes them REAL Indians... LOLOLOL!!! Sorry, I just couldn't resist!
I've been a die-hard Harley enthusiast for decades, but honestly, this new AMERICAN Indian is a real breath of fresh air. Supposedly, Harley is going to make a 500cc V-Twin "mini-Sportster" for the East Indian market, for around $6,000. That one would probably sell better right here!
I always liked the Royal Enfields too. NICE Brit bikes! One of the few 750's available back in the day. And that Norton was about as fast as a bike got back then. A pal of mine built one strictly for street racing for money in 1966. He beat so many "Rat-Motor" Chevies that we named it "Rat Poison".
Could be America will wake up before we get issued our gray "Mousey Tongue" worker suits and get assigned our government factory barracks bunks. Maybe not... We'll see pretty soon, if "certain legislation" goes into full effect in October. That's my birthday month... What a birthday present...
Keep the flag wavin'

Realize this is a old post but even if you never go to the rally , go there before the rally and see the country . Mount Rushmore , the new Craxy Horse , The Badlands and Blackhills and of course Wall Drug . The country is truly beautiful and the riding in the hills is super .Deadwood and Lead are two great history western towns. I spent many of happy hours touring that part of your country .
