my Jonway scooter seems really gutless when trying to go up a hill and I have to push it up part way. it only has 288 miles on it. I thought it would be better after it is broke in but not the case. Should I replace the belt already. Also when I try to accellerate it at times it sucks back instead of going faster.

Have you adjusted the valves? It's always good to start there. Check that first. Many people replace the stock belt with a quality belt right away it could be an issue but if it's slipping really bad it will normally smell like burnt rubber...

something seems wrong, def check the valves but 288 miles seems low for the valves to be out allready. also the belt shouldnt be bad yet . sounds as if the clutch may not be engaging properly.

My dealer told me many are need the valves adjusted out of the crate . Very important that you should have changed the shipping oil and gear lube before you rode it . Even if you have you should change it now as when new the rings grind down in the cylinder and the oil will have ring dust in it . The amount of dust varies according to how you do a break in . Use any brand name 10w40 engine oil , regular not synthetic yet , and use GL5 which is 80w90 gear lube for the gears . Belt should be fine even if a generic and for belts only use a Gates or Bando brand of belt . Now if you got it online or from a local shop who sells them as they come without tweaking it as my dealer does , then yes you will want to make some improvements . I had a TaoTao ATMa that was a " secret 63 " and it would outrun many stock 50s . A buddy just bought a TaoTao from another dealer who only uncrates and puts on the mirrors and I can outrun him on my mountain bike . I rode it and darn it was so sloooooow . 50s have EPA restrictions like too small of a main jet in the carb and some have a restrictor washer in the variator which limits the speed . Here is a great page for derestricting tips www.scootnfast.com/scooter/Tuning_mods/De-Restricting.htmNow if you do not have the restrictor washer what you should do is remove the variator weights which are roller types ( slider weights are after market item and much better choice ) weigh on a digital scale and get lighter rollers or even better Dr Pulley sliders . Lighter weights will improve take off and up hill but too light will hurt top end and MPG . I had 8 grams and got some 5 grams and it was amazing the improvement on take off and uphill and had the same top end but with more RPMs . You may want to get this weight tuning kit with various weights as you can mix 2 diff weights like 3 4g and 3 5g to equal 4.5g . These weights are for tuning and not meant for long term use . Once you find an amount that works get 1 gram heavier in Dr Pulley or Koso sliders . Here is some tuning tips www.provoscooter.com/tuningNow a 50cc is only 3 cubic inches so a small engine will never perform like a car or motorcycle . To get more power you need to get a BBK which is a larger piston and cylinder kit , which will require at least a larger main jet or even better a 20mm carb that you can adjust the air/fuel screw ( stock carbs are often sealed ) , some have the carb bowl riveted on instead of screws and you have to remove the bowl in order to access the idle and main jet in order to install larger ones and many stock carbs have no needle clip to adjust its position . Since it is new I would ride it as after 700 or more miles the piston will not be as tight as when new and move easier , just like new shoes can be tight but once broken in they get comfy . For a BBK hands down the best kit is the Air Sal 50mm BBK which I put in mine and I am shocked that it can be bought for 49 dollars as it is 100 more other places . This kit uses the stock head so there less parts to buy but you should use an extra base gasket as compression will be higher than the 40mm or 50cc piston . The Air Sal in made in Spain rather than China , is machined and has ceramic coating to prevent heat damage . I cracked a 63 piston and another exploded so no way did I want another . When the 2nd piston exploded I did research and joined the old scooter place , learned I was not the only one with issues and was suggested the Air Sal kit too . I was used to Honda and European moped , scooter and motorcycles and that was my first China scoot and I learned real fast they are far from being as good as a Honda . Here it is but they said out of stock as it was on sale and many here have gotten one www.spi-parts.com/gy6-airsal-81cc-big-bore-cylinder-kit-02350150.htmlScrappydog scooters is another great place to get parts , power kits or even an 80cc crate engine as well www.scrappydogscooters.com/139QMB_50cc_Performance.htmlSometimes a stiffer contra ( also called torque ) spring can help up hill

It is only a 49cc scooter and yes I did change the oil and gear oil, I don't need alot more speed just a bit more. If I am starting out on a tiny incline on my lawn it does not move hardly at all, going up a gradual incline you can start at the bottom of hill at 30mph and half way up 20mph by the time I get near the top 12 mph. Just would like to be able to keep at decent speed.

Lighter weights if your wanting more speed uphill . The trade off is possible lower top mph .

your too fat jk Oh, Domindart... You cut us to the quick... LOL! Only kidding... Hey, I'm too fat, but my old 150 will ROAR up a steep hill. Even with a passenger aboard. OK, with a passenger it doesn't exactly roar... more like a "poot". I haven't ridden a 50, but I believe it should still make it up a decent incline, even if not too fast. Our rider didn't mention whether the engine was revving when the scooter petered out on hills, or, if the engine bogs and runs out of power. If the engine is revving, but no wheel-speed, something's slipping. If the engine bogs, either it's short on power, or long on roller-weight. We need to know whether the engine bogs, or the tranny slips. Then, the 50cc boys can give shordie222 good advice. Ride safe,Leo in Texas
