ok So on my new VIP 150 My muffler broke off. I then had it taken to a shop and Was told a lawn mower muffler would work well(Also was suggested it off this site). I thought it was a great Idea. He took it and Welded it on and installed it all for 25$. 30$ total with the cost of the muffler and it was a pretty hefty little muffler.. Not tiny at all like the others, not cheap..
The bike sounded great. ran really well. But on the second day the engine cut out at a traffic light as soon as I stopped. I pulled it over to the side of the road. Wouldn't start. Turned it off, let it sit for a minute. Tried to start it. Started right up.
Drove it to where I was going from here.. Got there, and when leaving, worked fine.. Then on my way back. Turned the engine off to see if everything was ok. Tried to turn it back on.. Nothing... Let it sit for 10 minutes.. Started right up. Drove it around. Cut out again. Let it sit for 10 minutes.. However This time no go. That was 4 hours ago. Had to also recharge the battery sense the battery died.
Did I burn out my valves?. Is the engine Flooding with gas?. Carb?. spark plug?. Coincidence?.
anyone have any ideas on a fix?. I'm feeling lost. Really need help as it's my only transportation other than a bike.
P.s scooter is only 6 months old. about 6000 on the dash.

After letting it charge for an hour I tried to start it. It turned over very fast but still no start. ):

Check for spark- remove the plug and try cranking it *making sure that the plug is grounded to the valve cover or some other engine ground. You could also try spraying a little starter fluid directly into the inlet of the carb. If it starts (or tries) with starter fluid it's not getting gas. I had a similar intermittent cut off and no start problem shortly after installing my bbk- come to find out the previous owner had cut the cdi wires for some reason and taped them back together- the tape had started to come off and they were shorting against each other. This caused the plug not to fire but only when I was leaning the bike over a little

How exactly do I test for spark?. And how do I ground the spark plug to the valve cover?.
Thanks

Well I remembered when the engine was running and I had grabbed the spark plug one time it shocked me. I tapped it while the engine was trying to start and I got no shock. Is this conclusive?.
However when I grabbed the spark plug the first time It was like falling out almost and I ended up fixing the bike by pushing the spark plug in again.

[replyingto=michaeljackson]michaeljackson[/replyingto]Sorry I worte that late last night and saw no reply so I just got back. To test for spark pull the plug wire off the plug and either remove the spark plug or if you have a spare plug (good or bad) just attatch the spare plug to the wire. ground the plug to the valve cover by simply touching the threaded part or the ground electrode (the little L shaped finger that the spark jumps to from the center electrode) to the valve cover. Hold the plug there and have someone else crank the bike. It might be hard to see so look closely but you should see a spark jumping across from the center electrode to the ground electrode. If you're not getting spark report back. If you ARE getting spark then try spraying a little starter fluid into the carb (remove air tube from carb first). Just spray a little, like a 1/2 second blast- you don't want to drown it. If you try to crank immediately after that it *should* start or try to start. If that works report back- if you have spark and still no go with the starter fluid then you dont have compression. This could be timing related or catastrophic damage inside the engine (unlikely).

[replyingto=gatekeeper]gatekeeper[/replyingto]Now that I read over your post again I have to agree with gatekeeper. When the bike dies coming to a stop it's usually valve adjustment related. Factory service manual wants valves adjusted every 1k miles or so- I do mine about 2k or as needed (you learn to start hearing them if they're loose but yours are probably too tight.). I'd check that too- it's easy, inexpensive and once you've done it once or twice you can do it in 10 minutes. All you'll need it a feeler gauge (cheap), an 8mm socket and ratchet and a little patience. Maybe a pair of pliers and a phillips head... no real tools required. The key is to make sure you get the valve lash correct. I normally insert the feeler guage of appropriate thickness in and tighten down the adjusting screw then tighten the lock nut with the feeler still in there. When you pull the feeler out you should feel *slight* resistance but you shouldnt have to yank on it. Do this for both valves and you should have set it correctly. Check the manual for correct valve lash... Report back and let us know what you figured out. =)

Well it won't start still. Let it sit all night. Not indicative of a overheating problem?.
What is a valve lash?. Where are feeler gauges sold?. What do you mean by correct valve lash?. Thanks.

I took out the spark plug. Pressed it against the valve cover. I don't see any spark of any kind. However the engine sound different without the spark plug in. Spark plug is kinda black.

was the plug connected with the plug wire or did you just touch the plug against the head ?
