My music is normally at a level that is less than the wind noise. What do you guys do to eliminate the wind noise so you can hear them sneaking up on you?

I don't use them myself, but I was following this thread. I find it extremely amusing, (and typical for R.I.) In this stare, you do not have to wear a helmet on any bike of any size, Yet it's illegal to even have(helmet) earbuds in your possesion And you can get pulled over and cited for not wearing a seatbelt in your car! Go Figure

scootn', ear PLUGS are one thing, and ear BUDS are another.
PLUGS I don't think are illegal. Like you said, they cut down on white noise etc. BUDS are illegal (at least in KS) 'cause like jwalz said they create a distraction and can muffle sounds you need to hear (ie sirens).
Me, I know when I'm driving the car and a good song comes on, I'm less attentive to my driving. It's the same as talking to your friend sitting next to you, or the phone you're blue toothed on. It's all a lesser form of texting while driving. It still amounts to that part of your attention isn't on your driving it's on the conversation or the song.
Do I still do it? Sadly, yes. I love music. But I typically turn off the radio when things get trafficky and I need all my attention focused on the road around me.
dom', seriously, yes do turn down the music. And do please check whether buds are legal or not in GA.

I did earbuds for a little while. Was too much fooling around to get them to stay in place.
From the technological overkill end of the spectrum -->
Too much going on?, sometimes. Expensive?, yes. But an intercom system makes a world of difference if you're riding with a passenger or with another bike in traffic. All the bluetoothy magic and noise cancelling is just icing on the cake.

The law in many/most areas says no head phones or ear buds for people operating motor vehicles but usually there is a lawfull alternative so just take it in the direction that the laws allow and it is usually a simple compromise. Here headphones or buds in both ears are not allowed so ok you use a single ear bud, stereo helmet speakers or even do a nifty mod with stereo mirrors on your bike with hidden speakers built into them. Note that an in ear device such as an ear bud can get driven in deeply from any pressure to the side of the helmet or even just from wearing the a helmet making the flat disk helmet speakers a much safer option.
You stay complient with the law and you have fewer problems down the road. Your reputation is your most valuable possession and once you get a bad rep with your local police your usually going to be a long time working to fix it however you may not ever be able to.
