Used Mobile one 10w40 full synthetic and decided to give Royal Purple a try. Valves chatter is much louder. Wonder why. Same weight etc..

I rechecked them and intake was at .004 so i snugged it to .002 and kept exhaust at .003..Ive always set mine at .002 untill someone suggested .003-.005 for better performance. I guess i like the .002 best. No change in performance either.

Further research on this shows this is quite common in 4 strokes. The only thing I know is that conventional oil was quieter, mobile 1 slightly louder and royal purple even louder. So...im confident mobile 1 was offering better protection than the conventional and that the noise was just a byproduct of this protection. Perhaps royal purple is offering me even better protection than the mobile one.
Since dino oil has a masking effect on parts i think the nature of synthetics offer excellent metal to metal protection and if valves if adjusted properly will rattle in your hand if you take off the cover and check them at TDC. Since that is not really metal to metal contact except intermittently when depressed it makes sense.

I used Castrol at first then switched to Castrol Synblend after the break in . I did try the boric acid treatment with the Synblend as I was noid after reading where some used BA with a full synthetic and the starter clutch would slip and not be able to start . I saw on a buddies bronco that had a ticking which I thought was loose rocker arms or bad lifters , he was half a quart low and put in 3/4 of a quart since it used oil , and tada it stopping the ticking sound . I worked at Jiffy Lube when Castrol Syntec came out and even tested Slick50 . I noticed with Syntec in my car it was quieter and ran cooler . A trainee dry started a car after the oil was drained but not yet refilled . I yelled to him to shut it off . We filled it up and darn it was sounding bad . We drained some oil out added the whole quart of Slick50 and finished topping off the oil after checking the level and restarting up the engine . It did stop the noise but I still think Slick50 was a gimmick .
Is your Royal Purple full synthetic or blended ? I had a customer who came in every 1,000 miles only to get an oil filter change and had us pour in a quart of RP since the old oil filter had some oil in it . He did this for 2 years and never had the oil changed only the filter replaced and oil topped off .
Did you also clean the oil screen ?

I believe RP comes only in full synthetic.
I've heard good and bad about that oil. I stick with the castrol racing full synth. Does the job well enough and unless RP will give me serious butt dyno I will keep the castrol in.

Web is full of stories of RP foaming, myself as a former Maintenance manager I've seen first hand multi thousand dollar ammonia compressors shut down because of it and the company I worked for sued RP and settled for millions in damages.
Yes industrial oil is different than motor oil but that's all it took for me to never try it in any thing I ride or drive. Add the outrageous cost and the fact that I have 4 scooters totaling over 29k in miles on good old plain affordable Castrol dino oil tells me I don't need it.
I wouldn't put RP in my lawn mower.

Not RP, but synthetic nonetheless,Foamed like heck. fouled every control and safety on it. Repaired it Flushed it and have used dino turbine oil ever since. I don't like synthetic. JR

From Royal... Without question and as you suspected, Yes Royal Purple Max Cycle is going to provide a significantly higher level of wear protection and film strength than any Mobil 1 oil. Max Cycle typically is going to give you two or three times the film strength of a Mobil 1oil, and Mobil 1 is a very good quality synthetic oil. Noises aside, you are definitely giving your engine a level of protection that is unequalled by any other oils out there today by using our Max Cycle product.
I certainly do not want seem contentious, but engine noises can be pretty tricky to nail down, even when they seem to obviously be from a certain thing or area. Please let me share with you some things related to engine sounds and noise that we have observed over many years.
Sometimes there are inherent noises that can be coming are from areas that are not even lubricated by engine oil. Sometimes due to resonances in the engine or engine covers, or chassis they appear to be coming from a specific area, but turn out to be from a close but different thing. A great example is the very common tick from a fuel injector on modern fuel injected engines. It is not lubricated by engine oil, but it will seem louder after using Royal Purple because everything else gets quieter. It is also very close to the rocker covers on most engines.
This weird sound masking occurrence is something that we pretty regularly hear about and is actually due to significant reductions in general overall engine noise.
It typically is a noise that was likely always there but was perhaps masked by the higher level of general engine sounds and could sometimes be heard but it was perhaps faint, not prominent or readily apparent. When general engine noise is reduced, the noises that were faint before now can become very apparent. It likely isn’t actually any louder but it certainly sounds louder, due to all the other general engine sounds not nearly drowning it out any more.
From your description of the sounds that are occurring and the changes that occurred with the different oils that you have used before , I believe the “masked noise scenario” as described above still remains a very real possibility. As such this should give you further reassurance that the protection you are giving your engine is very high indeed.
Thanks for choosing Royal Purple and have a great day!
Best Regards,

Could also be that the thinner film is allowing excessive lash to occure in the valve train. It could also mean that their grades are a bit optomistic and you need to go up on viscosity with that brand of oil. If the film is thinner allowing more valve noise the question then comes up as to what the impact is in the oil pump which on a GY6 is marginal so that with the grade of Purple you are using it is not generating enough flow and pressure to float the bearings and lifters. More noise gennerally means that the film is not thick enough or it is failing altogether.
