Ok my scooter is a bone stock 150cc china scoot with the exemption of a cheap straight through "performance" muffler. I can get her up to a respectable 55mph that's on a level surface no headwind.at that speed I'm at 7100 rpm according to didgit tach,so I think there is more room for better top speed,so my question is.... And before I asked this I have researched this a lot with mixed opinions,so if I want some more top end do I get lighter roller weights to allow the engine to spin up to more rpm thus a few more mph? Will I loose lower end torq, this is where I'm confused some say you will others say you won't loose lower end by going lighter,of I do go lighter what's a good starting point? And if I'm going to mess with the weights would it be easier to just get an upgraded variator, they seem fairly cheep. Attachments:

The best thing in my opinion is for you to get a performance variator. They are larger and can give you a few more mph at the top end. Check out Prodigy and Dr Pulley variators.
On a 50cc scooter the weights are more important to tune than a 150, just an opinion there. Lighter weights will let the motor spin higher, I think about 500 rpm for every gram you lighten them. Top end might suffer a little, that jury is still out. Bigger weights will do just the opposite, you might have a poorer low end performance.

Call Mike at www.buggpartsnw.com he is by far the most knowledgeable I am aware of. He will take the time to discuss your needs and make a good recommendation...

55 @7100 is excellent. I wouldn't change a thing.

In cases where the engine can not hit top RPM lighter weights can go faster . Since you can hit 7,100 perhaps 1 gram or two may yield some top end gain and MPG but too heavy will slow down your take off and uphill . Dr Pulley sliders weights work better than round rollers just up 1 gram for sliders to equal the same as rollers

What gram weights are currently in there? If you put in 1 gram lighter weights that will raise your rpms to where the motor makes it max rpms which is 7500 rpms. What you want to do right now though is MARK your Variator and see at 7100 rpms how high is the belt climbing. If the belt is about 1/8 away from the edge 1 gram lighter to raise the rpms another 500-600 rpms may get you a couple more mph. If the mark left on the Variator is 1/4 of an inch or more then you need heavier weights or a different Variator. When you can get the belt to climb to 1/8 from the edge of the Variator that is excellent and that is about all she wrote without more rpms at that height. Alleyoop Go read this I put it together to help with decisions of what to do. I have done extensive testing I have tried different clutches, springs contra springs, roller weights, slider weights, Variators, belts even cut down a boss and tranny gears. itistheride.boards.net/index.cgi?board=gcvt&action=display&thread=47Mark it 1/2" by 1/2" and see how much of a mark is left. Here is my PRODIGY VARIATOR notice the mark left by the edge. Now that is a 4 1/2" diameter Variator 115mm the OEMS are a hair over 4" only. And that was with a stock 157QMJ motor. Of course I had all the other goodies on I was running 12g Dr Pulley Sliders. I am currently running with a KOSO 115mm Variator and I like it even better than the PRODIGY and I will tell you why. The Prodigy gives you less low end but moves the belt up fast for top end while the KOSO gives you both and they are much cheaper. I find the KOSO gives me a lot of pull at the low end and my trike is heavy 353lbs without me and I add another 180lbs. So more expensive does not mean better performance. Most will give you good top end all the time but you will loose a little on the low end getting up to speed. TVNACMAN has them As a matter of fact I bought two from him just to have a spare. I have tried all kinds of variators and rollers and weights and combos. I currently have a DR variator which I haven't tried yet that is the one from KIDS&ME it has a steeper ramp and a longer ramp and you put in lighter weights in the steeper ramp and heavier weights in the longer ramp. I will put that on when the weather gets better and post the results.
