Setup: 50cc 4T (qmb139), stock everything (except for variator weights). I'm looking to change out my transmission in the near future and I was initially going to just replace the variator. However, I'm also considering a full blown transmission upgrade (something like this: enviromoto.ecrater.com/p/6055029/ncy-performance-transmission-kit-gy6-50). Question: is upgrading the clutch and torque spring along with the variator helpful, or just a big waste of money for my scooter?

Spring, clutch springs along with weights is one of the best mods you can do to a 50cc.

Ha, true about the money. I just look at it this way: we save so much on insurance and gas since we sold one of the cars, it can't hurt spend some of the savings on the scooter hobby, right? On the other hand, the casual observer might say i'm on a quest to break everything on my scooter, one part at a time.

cheaper to buy the springs clutch and variator separate, i got the springs torque and clutch from scrappys ebay store for under 20 bucks for both, a koso variator for 25 on ebay, a performance clutch from scrappys for 39, and dr pulley sliders for 20, so 110 bucks shipped

Hard to argue with the savings...

With the NCY kit, you also get a performance clutch bell, something you definitely want to go with a performance clutch. Also, a performance clutch is intended to take more abuse than a stock one, I think I'll pass on the online vendors cheap mystery performance clutch. Also in the NCY kit, you get a performance torque sheave. I can't promise it will do anything for you that you'll notice, but you get one. The kit also comes with an outer drive face made to go with the performance variator you get, and an insulator for the torque spring - something that helps quiet the resonant vibrations you get from a stiffer torque spring.
Can you tell I bought an NCY kit? lol. I bought CVT parts one piece at a time for my 50cc, and I'm just as good of a deal hunter as anyone. I wished I had just bought the kit for it... which is why I did for the 150cc.

Buying premium brand name of parts is always a great idea as they should be way better than OEM . I prefer sliders instead of roller weights and I have Dr Pulley sliders in both on my scooters . More important the the CVT parts is to get a Bando or Gates belt as the generic ones are not even close to being as durable or last as long .
A BBK and retuning can put out more power than the 49cc engine. It does not have to work as hard to go down the road with the extra ponies so it will last longer than one being pushed to or near its limitation over time
