Like you, I have done most of the common improvements to my own 150, and, like you, 53 mph is all she wrote. Increasing the displacement would add some, along with experimentation with sliders in lieu of rollers, etc. But in all honesty, the Chinese 150 is not really meant to cruise 55 with some throttle left over.
Before putting any more money and time into it, I would SERIOUSLY consider "upgrading" to a larger ride. There are good, used Vespa 150's that actually WILL run 65 mph on the highway (if you don't mind the 10 and 11-inch wheels) and clean used, or even new Taiwan scoots in the 200cc class (really more like 160-170cc) that will touch a shade over 55 WOT. As the car-boyz will attest: "There's no replacement for displacement".
After five years riding the Chinese 150, I firmly believe many of us literally beat ourselves to death trying to make them run like a 250... It might be SO much more practical to just get a 250, or, a good used Italian 150 scoot that GOES like a 250... LOL!
If you can get the 150 engine to put out enough power to handle taller gears, you could gain a few mph, but a little headwind, a slight up-hill, adding a passenger, etc. will quickly remind you you're still 100+cc short of where you'd REALLY like to be.
Just my own observances, but for the cost of REALLY modding the 150, I think you can simply upgrade to something you'll be happier with. I stick with my 150 because 99% of my riding is in-town, and my zero-to-45 mph performance is fine there. I can hit just over 50 when I have to, but to get honest 55+ mph strong enough for some serious travel, a larger (or non-Chinese) scooter (or mid-size motorcycle) is probably the best solution.
Chinese 150's "are what they are" and no more... fine for what they're intended (once the factory bugs are worked out) but fight like the devil against being pushed into the role of highway cruisers. It's sort of like spending a lot of time and money trying to get a Yugo to run on the Autobahn.
Just my opinion,
Leo in Texas

[replyingto=oldchopperguy]oldchopperguy[/replyingto]I couldnt agree more,,the 150's are great for around town,,i dont like going much over 45 with mine,,its really happy at 35-40 and I think will last a long time if I ride it like that,,If I hold it WOT it will do over 50,,but man is it screaming like a stuck pig!! If most of the roads you travel are 35-45 MPH roads you will do fine with a 150,,if you want to blast back and forth to work everyday at 55-60 you need to get a 250 or a small MC IMO Tom

After some thinking, I placed her on Craigslist to see what interest there is, since I see several 250's and a few 300/400's there needing some TLC for less than the asking price I have mine placed at. I also have a 2001 SV650S streetfighter, and a very nice Katana that are both on the road right now. But I also like having something that I don't need to FULLY gear up for to ride. heh

Why don't you have to gear up to ride a scooter? The road doesn't care how many cc's you have it will hurt your the same whether you are riding a sport bike or scooter. Walking speed on up to over 100 mph is all potentially deadly...

I'll pass on the bait to turn this into a ATGATT debate. Thank you, though.

There's no debate road rash freakin hurts. I have had it on everything from skateboards to 1100's. sorry I'm not really debating I am saying with certainty you always need gear no matter the size of your bike. I sincerely hope you never find that out. I won't say anything else I just hope others don't read your statement and think they may not need it after all. So really no more trying to save your skin

Are there even any YUGOs left on the road? I thought they all disintegrated Yeah, every now and then, I still see one at Wally World... Bearings knocking, puking blue smoke, running on 2 or 3 cylinders... But HEY! With the resurrection of the new FIAT in America, the YUGO could become a sought-after item!Just think of it... YUGO!!! A sorta FIAT (real VINTAGE FIAT at that...) and all that Commie DNA mixed in with the Alfredo-sauce aura. Whoo Hoo! I can't wait! Well, maybe I CAN wait a little while.Heck, I've been waiting for a come-back of the JAWA 2-stroke, 2-cylinder-ONE combustion-chamber pressed-steel cycles now for DECADES! I always sorta liked those...Leo (being patient) in Texas

I found a windshield slowed me down. Adding more power allows the option for gears later if you still aren't happy with what you have. I found as I am a bigger guy my windsheild helps with speed as it forces the air over me
