So I toyed with variator weights a lot with 63ccs and found that I liked either 4g or 5.5g roller weight equivalent, 9g was too heavy, 6.5g wasn't accelerating enough, etc.
Now that I got my bbk I initially used 3 4g and 3 9g dr pulley slider weights and I found that to be a perfect setup. Acceleration was really quick and I could hit 51mph on flats. Now I've got the Koso Variator I upped it to 9g slider weights. My acceleration is "smooth"er than ever, but it's not as quick as it was with my 6.5g slider setup.
What is a safe range of variator weights for an 81cc bbk with a performance variator? Is it safe to go back to 3 4g and 3 9g weights or will that over rev my engine?
And for that matter, I could use a good cheap tachometer, anyone got a lead on one?

I think I'm gonna try my old setup again. It can't be as bad as six 3g weights on a 50cc, and six 4g weights was one of my favorite setups anyway. So three 4g and three 9g can't kill my scooter, I don't think. Just 3 9g sliders was probably my favorite setup, equaling 4.5g in slider weight. Right now my average max speed downhill is 54mph (with 58mph being the highest ever attained) and I can't quite hit over 41mph on flats unless there's an incline to assist me. I can 'maintain' around 45mph after going downhill, but I can't achieve that. Also, uphill my max speed is around 30mph, and I just can't have that. Scooterworks sells a variator weight tuning kit for 150cc scooters which includes the minimum of 6g roller weights which means something around 6g should be the minimum for an 81cc bbk scooter. So, I'm going with 6.5 slider equivalent weight for a test run in a little bit, once my bike cools off to change the weights. Unless someone here insists that I don't try it If it revs too high I guess I'll put my old variator back on until I can get some 7-8g sliders, or a variator tuning kit.

51.79mph downhill with 3 4g 3 9g weights. 45+ on flats. ;D
ALMOST 35mph uphill, man do I need a new torque spring...
EDIT: There's a variable in comparing to my previous top speed of 58mph with 9g weights and that is I put Seafoam in the tank for this last speed run. I did speed runs with 9g before and after the seafoam and with seafoam I seem to lose about 4mph, but that's to be expected.

[replyingto=lykos23]lykos23[/replyingto]Funny you say that,, I put 1oz.of castor oil in my gas tank today for top end lube purposes,,and it seems like the scoot is faster by a little,,I will have to check it with gps.Smells awesome also!! ;D

[replyingto=jerseyboy]jerseyboy[/replyingto]That's interesting, Tom. I'm pretty sure I put too much seafoam For some reason I've been putting a quarter cup in there, but that can't be the right measurement, not sure why I ever thought it was... I think a quarter cup is something like double the amount I'm supposed to put in there, haha. I read somewhere that the combustive properties of seafoam aren't quite as good as the gasoline so it can lower the rpms by a little bit. But overall it increases performance.

[replyingto=lykos23]lykos23[/replyingto]Haha,,yeah I never tried SF,,thats alot for a gallon of gas,,when I was younger we used to put a whole can of either starting fluid in our mopeds,,boy they would go like he11...lol..then we got into using aviation fuel its like 110 octane,,up jetting was a must,,i dont recommend doing either of those to your scooter though..lol..Ill just stick with my 1 oz of castor for the top.
BTW-I ordered a set of 13g sliders for my 150,,and a pocket gram scale off ebay,,gonna start playing with sliders/rollers shortly myself.
Take care...

Usually the ratio seafoam/fuel should be 1fl per gallon. The bottle is 16fl, and is recommended for upto 20gal tanks, so, yes, you probably put about 4-5x the amount in there.

Mo from scrappydog scooters said that the performance variator with 5 gram weights and an jet should work fine. But, as you have observed, every scooter is different. I.m going to use that as a starting point, and tweak things from there.

According to seafoam's website, the mix is 1oz./gal. ;D

[replyingto=salracer]sailracer[/replyingto]Thanks sailracer, that's very reassuring! I'm using 5.5g roller equivalent right now, so I should be fine. According to google conversion I put 2oz worth in there. so I only doubled the amount I'm supposed to put. Thanks for putting the website's recommendation. Today I tried another speed run and I can only get up to 48 downhill. Seafoam does wonders for top speed

I use 8g rollers with a Kosovo variator seems to work very well it tops out at about 50 and good acceleration I have an ebay 83cc kit that I've used for 5,400 kilometers.
