could someone explain how the gears affect the speed? I want more top speed. have a 50cc VIP with performance exhaust, free flow filter, upjet the carb, koso variator with 8.5g rollers, hot coil and the 52mm bbk. getting up to about 49-50 before and after the bbk. no change in top speed just accel. I think im running out of gear. not sure tho. any ideas? thanks

50cc gears?

Well I think upping the gearing is a good idea, but if you go to high on a stock 50 all you will do is slow down your acceleration and have wider swings in Highs and lows... Even if you have a 72 bbk with the stock head your not going to be making full use of your new gearing, as driving these gears you need the torque to do so...
Here's what I'm thinking.
Stock 50 No bbk or bb head....... No Gearing Mods BBk 72cc stock head................... No Gearing Mods BBK 72cc stock head w/hp cam.. No Gearing Mods, from this point down all must include a Free Flow Muffler BBK 83cc Stock head...................16/50 BBK 83cc stock head...................16/50 BBk 83cc BB Head and cam........ 17/49

Be prepared if you get the gears, you'll have to find a machine shop with a major hydraulic press to get the two gears pressed together. Ideally it should only cost about $10 to get them pressed, since it should only take about 5 minutes of their time. But I had a shop try to gouge me and charge $25 bucks.

If you have a monster vice and big sockets you can press them yourself. I've done my own that way.
