A decent pair of boots, helmet that protects the face and chin, riding gloves are more important now than ever as computers and being able to key are required by so many occupations and a decent riding jacket with sufficient armor to protect you back, shoulders and elbows should be included in your basic budget along with the motor vehicle insurance, title fees and road exise taxes.
A disposible pay as you go cell phone that has GPS can be a really cheap substitute for Lojak. Just hide it under the cowling and wire the charger to the battery and you can get you bike located in a flash.

I agree with the guys, at the very minimum a helmet and gloves. I didn't go read back, but you only need to go a little ways, right? So despite that I'm Miss Safety, if money is tight then skip the armoured jacket FOR NOW. But also don't go driving around a lot 'til you can afford the jacket. Boots, you can pretty much use any good pair of hiking or work. Just make sure the soles are good and non-slip. And they tie over your ankles. I found a pair that looked brand-new at Savers for less than $10. (yes rocky, they're pink ) You know, check CL for jacket and pants, and even gloves. That's gear that even if it's taken a fall can still be good. Just check it over for tears or anything. But the helmet, pony up for new there. You just don't know what that other guy's done with his helmet. That, and do you really want to put your head where a stranger's head has been in? Dandruff? Lice? Stranger sweat? Mainly, take your time and don't jump into anything. Keep saving your money while you're looking for the right deal. If you're not in a hurry, then you can walk away from a sort-of good deal and get the really good deal later. Gives you better bargaining position too, if you make it obvious you're not all hot to buy and are quite willing to walk without buying. Even if you're too excited and in love with a specific bike (like me), you can still bargain (they wouldn't drop the price 'cause they knew I was hooked, but I did get my Nolan helmet for free). >'Kat

What if I was rushed to the hospital wearing those whites (Now Pinks!) underneath what would the doctors and nurses think? For the newbe with all kidding and colour aside get safe stuff that you can afford and is appropriate to the climate where you ride. There are decent choices out there that even new can cost you less than $200 for helmet, boots, gloves and jacket. Cycle gear has the Bilt Demon Modular helmet on sale regularly for around $50 which has a 5 year warranty and Sedici gloves which are guaranteed for life in the $30 range. Leather Up has mesh jackets with level 3 armor in the $60 range and a variety of full faced modular helmets around $50 and some for less. Unfortunately no 5 year or Lifetime guarantees last time I looked. Two years ago I bought a $39 helmet, $59 Silver Ignitor Jacket and $25 perforated/mesh leather carbon fiber gloves from Leather Up. The Hawk helmet held up well for 2 years but shows its age (now semi retired and used for when the weather looks like it may rain), the Silver Ignitor Jacket still has a few years use left in it despirte daily 4 season use over the past 2 years and numerous machine washings while the gloves did not last a year before comming apart. The Cycle Gear Sedici gloves which cost about the same have lasted more than a year and when they do finally fail will be replaced at no charge or at least get me a store credit of the original price towards a new pair. You can find sturdy black leather over the ankle boots that can be worn under a suite if need be starting at $29.99 locally at Kmart, Walmart, Payless and Sketchers. I am still searching for riding over pants however the Xelement from LeatherUp are on the short list.

rocky, they'd think "Here's a man secure in his masculinity." that's what they'd think. ;D For pants, I got the Tourmaster Venture. Mesh, plus windbreaker and quilted removable liners. I think it was a bit under $150. Best deal I could find with both liners. Of course, you being in sweltery FL you probably don't really need the quilted liner.... (btb, they're not pink, they're silver and black ) >'Kat

There's no way I could put myself in debt.... Seeing as I don't hold a credit card and any type of financing is not available to minors... My job pays pretty well for someone of my age. Of course I would use neccecary safety gear. I'm buying a road bicycle this week and won't even ride that without a helmet. I'm also going to equip it with headlights and leds to make myself as visible as possible. I feel like I kind of just got judged as a wreck less teenager who wouldn't take safety into account... I value my safety a little to much... Not all of you who replied. Just maybe one or two. And no I'm not buying the bike because I think its a step to a two wheeled life... I'm just looking for some cheap transportation for right now, walking is a bummer. Oh any thanks for all the tips on pricing of good riding gear.

Dunno' about any of the others, but I didn't take you for a reckless teen. You sound very sensible in your posts. And even more so now. It's just whenever someone posts they're new to scooters, we typically go into buying protection with your scoot. 'Cause not everyone thinks of that, too. Btb, I probably wouldn't wear the scooter/motorcycle helmet on your bicycle.... >'Kat
