Hi everyone . I just joined here and have a nagging question that I can't really find an accurate answer for . I bought an AGM Retro scooter last week with only 24klm on it . Guy had it for a year an never rode it . Anyway , it is the 50cc version an I'm looking into some mods to do to it like rollers, unlimited Cdi unit , 80cc bbk with head, exhaust and carb upgrade later . But I really want to know is what kind of speed is realistic with these upgrades . I have read everywhere different top speeds with the same upgrades an therefor can't really tell if they are BSing or what . If its like only 5mph I might keep it stock and just ride the crap out of it . Here in Finland there are cycle paths next to roadways connecting many cities and if not a path a cycle lane on the roadways , make for a great scooter cruising country. Also last question , what difference would it make to go WOT as no matter what speed you are going the rpms on the motor are the same on a cvt transmission ?

[replyingto=freefour1968]freefour1968[/replyingto]Hi! Welcome to the forum. When I had a 63cc top end my top flat speed was around 35mph on average. Now that I have a 81cc (50mm) bbk, sliders, and clutch springs my takeoff and acceleration are awesome and my top speed is closer to 45mph on flats. Here are my former speeds with varying variator weights from when I had 63cc: (I weigh 267lbs so the speeds here will be higher for a lighter rider and should be roughly similar to the speeds expected from a 50cc scooter with an average sized rider) 4g: 35mph uphill, 33mph GPS 40mph flat terrain, 36mph GPS 45mph downhill, 39mph GPS Three 4g and three 9g: 32mph uphill, 28mph GPS 40mph flat terrain, 37mph GPS 50mph downhill, 43mph GPS Six 9g: 30mph up hill, 25mph GPS 40mph flat terrain, 38mph GPS 47mph downhill, 40mph GPS Three 4g sliders and Three 6.5g rollers: 33mph uphill, ~40mph flat terrain, 37mph GPS 48mph downhill, As far as WOT goes, you kind of have to beat the crap out of your engine because it's only 50cc, once you upgrade to a 81cc (or more) you won't have to go WOT nearly as much (but there's still more power, and thus more wear on the engine/crankshaft). Best of luck to ya in your upgrades!

I kwn the biggest bbk out is a 88cc /52mm.. with a 44mm stroker crank and Big Valve head. with a properly tuned cvt and a gear up kit..you can probably get that bad boy up to 60mph. ;D that is my plans for my scooter in the next few months

Thanks for the info guys , Hank those are some awesome mods you've done . I think I will go a little milder and get a 72cc bbk, bigger jet on the carb , better exaust , an tunable Cdi unit , and maybe coil . If I can squeeze 60kmh out I would be happy 80 Klmh would be awesome.

My stock TaoTao ATM50 does 40MPH, but when fueling with BP Premium fuel (over here in USA), it goes a lot faster. When the engine is heated up, and the roads are level, it goes upto 48MPH, 53 with some wind in the back.
If you're living in a hilly area, the BBK is going to give you better climbing ability. It does very little on top speed, unless you also change the gearing.

A 47mm bbk added about 10 more mph with the increased torque and hp.

If it is the famous 63cc, then I'd say 100 true cc's is about what you need to get around fine on a scoot, and speeds high enough to go anywhere but the highways, or interstates, though as long as you can maintain 50MPH (40-45MPH on highways), you're allowed on them.

You're allowed to go on highways only if you can top 40mph there? So bicycle riders aren't allowed on or?

Remember at WOT intake vacuume is reduced so eventually the fuel mix will lean out and start causing heat damage. When things in the cylinder get too hot you start burning valves, siezing pistons in the bore and sometimes burn a hole in or melt the top of the piston throwing the connecting rod through the side of the crankcase.
Basically if you have to run WOT then you really need a bigger engine. Many follow the 75% or 80% rule and consider the maximum crusing speed to be attained at 75% to 80% throttle with anything above that just for short durations for passing or getting over a hill.
