my previous thread may have died, so i'm starting a new one. you can find the old thread here: itistheride.boards.net/index.cgi?board=50ac&action=display&thread=2069&page=1Here's a new youtube video so you can hear what it sounds like when i try to start it: here's the deal: I have a 2009 Schwinn Sport 50. Last summer I added a 100cc big bore kit, and it worked for the rest of summer/fall. this spring I took it out and rode it for maybe a week, but now it won't start. things i've tried: I replaced spark plug (and confirmed that it sparks) I've confirmed that it has compression I've confirmed that the vacuum is opening the valve to let fuel into the carb. I've tried it with starting fluid, still nothing. I checked the valves, which seem to be adjusted correctly. not sure what else to do/look at . . . I'm learning as I go, so any help would be greatly appreciated. thanks! Mitch

I have gotten gas with water in it before and my perfect running scooter would not start up the next day . I called my scooter dealer since it was new and was perfect . He told me that had a scoot in the shop with the same issue and it baffled them too . They drained the gas tank and bowl on the carb , refilled with ethanol free gas and tada it started up . I went to Harbor Freight and bought a siphon pump for 5 bucks and drained out the gas into a gas jug that I used for a bon fire . Mine was alive again too . I normally only get gas from a few places but I was in the deep country and could not make it to a trusted station .
Did you do a compression test with a gauge ? What did you set the valves to ? Tried starting spray ? I did and it would hit then die so it told me it was a fuel problem . Not suggested to use it as the ether dries out plastic and rubber parts . Any leaks in the intake or exhaust ?
Sounds like a weak battery . Got a trickle charger ? Tried the kick start ? The scooters seem to have a super wimpy kickstart as it easy to break unlike many of my motorcycles that I had to " man kick " in order to start em up

I have had four bad cdi's this week on my repair jobs i keep them in stock since its so common for four stroke china scoots, put new cdi's on the scoots they fired right up and away they went

Okay, so if I was going to get a new cdi, is there anything i should be careful of? looking through amazon i see that some say 50cc, 110cc, etc. do i need one which specifically says 100cc?

Isn't there a way to test the CDI?? Man I hate to see this poor guy just throw parts at the scooter and cross his fingers. I thought mechanics tested components to determine fault before ordering parts. If the bike has spark how would the CDI be bad?? Is the spark consistent? How did you check compression? Did you verify timing? What did you set the valve clearance to? Do you have deep pockets? If so just order one of everything and replace them all one by one...

Thanks, I appreciate your comments.
I set the valves to .08mm, then someone told me they should be at .04mm, so i put them there, then someone told me they should be at .08 . . . sigh, either way, didn't work.
I tested the compression by taking out the spark plug, covering the hole with my finger, and trying to start it. air pressure pushed my finger off the hole.
The spark looks consistant, but i'm not really sure what it is supposed to look like. How would i test the timing?
i do not have deep pockets . . .:-(

You check it when you have the valve cover off t check the valves. The cam should close both valves when the piston is at TDC. You can check the piston by inserting a long straw in the spark plug hole and watching it rise and fall when it reaches the highest point your cam gear should line up and indicate TDC to you should also have spark somewhere slightly before than usually. Check that by putting a 12V light hooked to the trigger wire to the CDI it should light up slightly before TDC (BTDC) Let me know if you need clarification.

Thanks.
What is TDC?

Top Dead Center or the highest the piston travels before it start to move back down.
See if this helps

Well if he does not know what top dead center is he may have adjusted the valves incorrectly when the valves were not off the high lobes completely. Alleyoop

Well if he does not know what top dead center is he may have adjusted the valves incorrectly when the valves were not off the high lobes completely. Alleyoop Good thought. The high lobes are the elongated portion of the cam the pushes you valves open. They need to not be in contact with valves when you adjust the valves and the engine needs to be at top dead center to do the valve adjustment correctly. I'm thinking you may have improperly adjusted your valves like alley...

okay, when I get home I'll make sure the valves are adjusted correctly by adjusting them while at TDC.

Great, line up the CAM SPROCKET like this THEN adjust your valves. Alleyoop
