I saw "Star Trek Beyond" at the cinema. Trekkies will want to see it at the theater, but the rest of us can wait for video. The theme of the movie was whether ethnic diversity strengthens a team or weakens it, so the release was very timely. The Star Trek TV series was one of the first to feature people of a variety of ethnicities in a positive light, on the same team. Getting back to the movie, I thought it moved a little slow. Star Trek movies have always been more about the characters than the story. Without those memorable characters, I guess it would just be another generic space movie.

I forgot to mention that Capt Kirk did some motorcycle riding in Star Trek Beyond.

I saw "Jason Bourne", the latest in the 10 year series. Slow moving at times, but has interesting characters. We learn a little about Jason Bourne's father. Motorcycle chase. Worth a trip to the theatre, IMHO.

We saw "Suicide Squad" at the theater. Recent Will Smith movies have not impressed me, but I like this one. The characters were interesting and the story was not predictable. The movie trailers made me think It might be another "Dirty Dozen" but it wasn't. Except for using prison labor, there were few commonalities between the two stories.

Saw the "The Accountant" with Ben Aflek. It is a familiar story line but this is a fresh take on it. It is also a commentary on how we view mental disorders. If you like Ben, see it on the big screen.

I saw Fantastic Beasts, a J.K. Rowling story. First hour was fun. Second hour passed more slowly and the story wandered. Rental or netflix

Saw Dr Strange. Total nerdgasm! My friend who isn't that into comics really liked it too. Big screen for sure, and she thinks 3d would've been better. I think I would've been puking seeing the dimensions-hopping in 3d. But then, I also get carsick.

I saw Sully. It is about the dual engine failure and safe, dead stick landing on the Hudson River. Slow moving movie, except when the NTSB investigators were questioning the pilots. The harsh questioning of the pilots by the NTSB was not exaggerated. I was a military pilot for five years and we were told that we could expect that treatment by a field flight performance board following a crash or serious incident. I never did any piloting after leaving the military. I was lucky and never had to face such a board, but I knew people that did.

Saw Rogue One. I liked it, but agree with my nef and friend that dialogue was weak.
My other best friend went after, thought it was nothing but action and too many explosions, and nothing else.

******************SPOILER*******************SPOILER*********************
Five minutes into the movie, it dawned on me that every single one of these new character we were seeing would have to die by the movie's end. Otherwise what was the excuse for none of them appearing in the original SW? Made it really REALLY hard to care about any of them when you know they're all doomed.

I remember hearing about the purge. For one day, anything goes and nobody gets arrested. Was it as much of a downer as the trailer made it out to be, or was it a good movie, Kat?

I thought it was good. Didn't seem like too much action/explosions to me. But then I like a good action movie. And they did try to give us some character building too. But like I said, it's hard to get into the characters' plight and conflict when 1) you know how it ends (first Star Wars) and 2) you know all those neat new characters must die.
Oh, and the superfluous totally unneeded C3PO/R2D2 cameos just irritated the crap outta me. And the vaguely creepy computer-Tarkin played by computer-Cushing was a bit creepy. First off, you know he's dead so where'd he come from. Second, although they really did an excellent job animating and putting "him" into the scene, there was just something that was a bit off, that wasn't quite right and fully meshing. Computer Carrie wasn't nearly so bad, but then she had all of five seconds or so and barely interacted with the real world.
I hope they don't continue that, of resurrecting dead actors with computer animation.

Sorry, I thought you were referring to Star Wars how it seemed like a purge.
I never saw The Purge. Although I did see the Star Trek ep where that happened.
Years ago I'd go with a friend to a movie almost every week. He had an excellent job with the gov't while I had minimum wage, so although I'd offer to pay he insisted. Mostly he hated going to movies alone (same as me). But those days are long gone, and I only see movies in theaters that I think need that super large screen. Or else that I just can't stand to not see, like Dr Strange. Which btb did benefit from the large screen. I'll love it small tv, but I think it'll lose some esp in the magic.
