Hey everyone... So I'm looking into getting a scooter to use as my primary summer ride. I figured that it would be the most practical choice as they're great on gas, insurance is about half that I pay on my car, and they seem like a fun way to get around town. I've narrowed my search down to 150cc scooters as many can still do 80- mpg, but are highway capable for when needed. I live in a city without freeways (Winnipeg) where the speed limit ranges from 50- km/h throughout the city, so I shouldn't have any issue keeping up with traffic. Anyways, I'm at a loss of where to start looking. I'd preferably like to spend under $3000, but if it's necessary I'd be comfortable going up to $4000. I took a look at the PCX 150 and was impressed, but it is priced a little high for my liking. Any recommendations or cheaper models? Thanks

Hey, thanks for the quick reply! Funny you should mention the Nitro 150, O was just browsing Kijiji (a Canadian Craigslist alternative), and stumbled on this. An '09 Nitro 150, 1600 km/1000 mi, for the same $1400 price. I'm sure I could probably haggle it down $100 or $200. How's the scoot been? Can it do 60mph without any problems, and does the under the seat storage fit a full face helmet? Also, what kind of fuel economy ratings do you get? Thanks

Have a look at Kymco and Genuine. They have some nice scooters in your range. Kymco super 8 might do it for you if you enjoy the styling of the PCX or the Like 200i if a classic flavor is more to your liking.

Thanks for the help so far, guys. I appreciate it.
I took a look at the Super 8 150, I like the styling (I prefer the look of the sportier models to the traditional step through bikes), and being from a reliable brand like Kymco I'm sure it'll run forever, and the fit and finish is up to snuff. I also like the idea of buying a new bike better, simply for warranty and service reasons.
Any idea how these 150cc scoots handle multiple passengers, and how they handle longer (30 minute plus) journeys on highways? Any other bikes you can recommend? My only real requirement is that I'd like to stay away from some of the cheap Chinese unknowns.

Look at the buddy 170i as well fuel injection and decent speeds, of course then you are back around the price of the PCX. Sym has some nice rides too. Any of these bikes can handle passengers and I am told holding it wide open all day will not hurt it them at all. I know the Honda will take it for certain. Sym you may like alliancepowersports.com/models/HD.htmlLots of nice bikes out there right now I had a very hard time choosing and then well look I ended up with a very old scoot with a new engine. Anyway when you ride them one will speak to you.

My 2012 Tomos Nitro 150 will reach 60-62 mph on level ground with two people (260 lbs). It cruises between 50-55 mph at 3/4 throttle. The carb was all sealed up (fuel screw, float bowl cover, diaphragm cover) stock, but after taking it apart it was easy to tune. 1/8 turn richer on the fuel screw, #108 main jet switched to a #110. My worst gas mileage so far has been mph, the best 96 mpg. Just remember it is an air-cooled 150cc and strong headwinds and hills will can definitely slow down your top speed. That being said, I haven't found a hill yet that slowed us down below 50 mph indicated (47-48 actual). The specs say 252 lbs dry weight, but it is actually 236 lbs with oil and brake fluid. The suspension and chassis are very robust, it can handle most dirt and gravel roads with ease. Over 800 miles and counting, running strong with no issues. This Tomos Nitro is built by SYM, but parts are generic and easy to find. For the price it's hard to beat if you are looking for a smaller but capable scooter.

You have to decide whether you want new or used and what level of quality you want. You can get a new Chinese one of decent quality for a grand. But it sounds like at your price range you kind of want top notch, and the PCX 150 was a great place to start. I LOOOOOOOVE that neat little machine. My main concern with it is that if used for more than just around town, it has a small physical size/less visable than other choices and if you go on the highway might be intimidating. Just a bigger size can make a difference in how other vehicles treat you and the PCX is small. But something you may want to look at, somebody suggested SYM is the RV 200 EVO. It is the same price as the PCX 150, a new looking design, very well built and a little more highway capable than the PCX. The asking price is $3699 but I gaurantee you the dealer will move at least $500 off of that. It is similar to what Scootnwin suggested, but I like having the windbreaking fairing and windshield if doing some highway. Of the 2 SYMs the HD will be a little quicker because it is lighter and has larger wheels for bad pavement, the RV will be more nimble. I prefer more headlight area and dual lights just for safety sake. On some scooters the left one is the regular and the right is the brights and i don't know on this model but if that is the case you can modify so both sides are on at all times. My scooter has headlights and led strips on each side that are on at all times and it looks UFO bright coming down the street in daylight. I notice people pick me up in there vision quickly. I like that, it is nice to have. Kymcos are nice and I own one. And frankly, I would not worry about gas mileage too much id you try a 200 instead of a 150. I still get 75 or more mpg on my 300. Here is the Evo:

BTW....The PCX is pretty much the only FI bike in the 150 segment after the demise of the CFMOTO Echarm and Glory is it not?

For about the same money as the PCX150 you can get and Aprilia Sport City 250 which can get 80 mpg city (55 mph and under) and 70 mpg highway. It can carry 460+ lbs and tops out well past 80 mph. Most 150cc bikes get their best fuel economy below 35 mph.

For 3k you can get a BMS TBX 260 EFI, maxi scooter like a burgman, but with fuel injection. 80+MPG. 80+MPH top speed. They're good biks, but complex. You could also get a Linhai (Aeolus) 200/250/300 for that price. The Aeolus gets lower MPG though (~66MPG).
