got a used scoot today and wanted to adjust the valves as it was tapping rather loud. well one of the locking nuts is missing.  took the other one to the auto store in hopes of finding the same thread but no luck. does anyone know where i can get a new nut locally or will i have to order online? thanks. |

And I guarantee I can go find it at a hardware store.
I have found every other bolt and nut I ever needed.

they had a thread chart of the ones they carried. had the right size but the threads didn't match.
guess advance auto parts is the wrong place to check. i'll look for a hardware store.

Hope you try and find the missing nut, because it is most likely fell down where the cam chain opening is.
If it gets on the crank sprocket its adios motor.

Try one of those magnetic tip extensions? i'll give that a shot but i'm not too optimistic of the outcome. if that doesn't work i really can't see myself taking this scoot apart. how much damage can a tiny nut do, seriously? |

nuts can do tons of damage. On the other hand, you are running with the missing nut possibly in the case, I feel if you have oil in the pan, you aren't likely to bounce it up into the cam chain or anything.
If you are very lucky, maybe the nut will fall out when you pull the drain plug or the filter screen. I'd lean the bike wll over to one side or the other then open the plug or screen.
A magnet on a flexible aluminum wire is nice - it can get into the corners better than a magnet on a telescoping stick.
I do not know where to buy one. I know one guy with one if I need it.

I know one guy with one if I need it. so it's possible it dropped into the oil pan? i changed the engine oil and gear oil yesterday before i started the valve adjustment. i poured it into a container, i'm going to check that oil before i do anything else. if it isn't in the old oil, should i search the oil pan with magnet? i have no idea where to look other than near the chain. |

If you can't find the nut locally I did find a site that sells it online. I was doing a valve adjustment on my 150cc scooter and found that the valve adjustment screw was stripped (either by the factory or whoever did the first PDI.) So I needed to buy the screw and the nut. I bought mine from Scooterworks. www.scooterworks.com/valve-adjusting-nuts--pair--gy6-products-969.phpIt also appears as though the GY6 125/150cc cam holder retainer bracket and rocker arms kit from scrappydogscooters includes the parts you need but you may want to call to verify it. |

There is no way the nut can come out from any of the two OIL DRAIN PLUGS. The oil drain plug with the filter DOES NOT GO INTO into the crankcase. The other drain plug on the side of your kickstand the hole is to small for the nut to fit. You need to get one of those magnetic extnesions and try to fish if out through the cam chain opening. Now it could be on top of the Chain guide or inbetween the chain by the crank or along side the crank at the bottom.
