Ya, it should be worn all time.. I wear my full face helmet all the time, but depending on temperature out doors, well I slack up some on all the protective gear. I don't ever ride without some shoes on my feet. A sneaker will some what protect your feet in a low speed accident. The sneaker is not as good as a boot, but not wearing shoes at all or sandles is stupidity. Also shorts and tank tops- again a bit dangerous if you crash. You will get road burn.. I generally wear blue jeans and a jacket. But again it gets hot outdoors in the summer. Been thinking of buying a mesh jacket with protect back gear. Black leather will make ya sweat like a pig.. lol.. Buying new gear from leatherup.com is what I will do eventually.

I have seen a real foot attached to a person who was wearing low shoes and got into a low speed (10 to 20 mph tops) mishap where his 500+ lb bike got bumped/nudged by a car that put him off the bike and it was far worse than what was depicted here. Low shoes/sneakers usually fly off shortly into the crash. At that point toes get removed and feet can be split open the entire length top to bottom from between the toes right up the the shin/ankle. Afterwards they are black and blue along with badly swollen and may take years to heal to a barely tolerable level. You can be looking at 1 or 2 years of surgeries and an equal to double that number of additional years of physical therapy.
My friend laments constantly that if only he had been wearing boots instead of oxfords. If only I had been wearing more than a 3/4 helmet. If only I had a pair of riding gloves. If only I had been wearing a riding jacket.
He also took a hit to the chin giving him a fractured jaw and his hands were also badly messed up. Since he was not wearing a riding jacket he also chipped a vertibrae but thankfully he was unconscious for over a week and had not been able to try and get up so they got the chip out before it did any spinal cord damage. The jacket at that speed would had definately prevented the back injury, broken shoulder and elbow injuries. Don't ride without gear. Even if the bike is standing still a fall from a bike unprotected can still injure or kill.

I know we have disagreed on steel toe boots, but the way I look at it you're not going to get an injury for a FALLING object, but more than likely by impact. That surely would have kept his foot from being split open by a sign post.

Wanna see something really scary? ? This was before they cut it off ABOVE the knee as it was too destroyed to be saved. They tried, 4 surgeries later they gave up. And, Oh yea, this is NOT photoshopped. Ankle high boots, kevlar plated blue jeans, wouldn't a made no difference, as the bumper of the GMC Jimmy did the first amputation. (Dr's did the rest)

Man, that sux Dave, is that a relative? Nope. That's Dave. Well, most of him. IIRC, "The Man" here used to be a USAF Master Sergeant(?), with a long and distinguished career who loves to ride hogs. Having survived (probably) many war zones, he was taken out by a cager while enjoying his hobby in retirement (I assume). Sorry for the shameless story hijack there Dave. But I just think your story really highlights what could happen to any of us. Silver lining: Dave found automatic, scooter based trikes, and now makes this forum a better place to hang out. Ian

That surely would have kept his foot from being split open by a sign post. Steel caps tend to flip and sever all the toes in one fell swoop. Can give you a false sense of security. They are good when the shoe is solid on the floor where even if the cap pushes through the sole it will stop on the concrete however if the force is offset toward the instep, on soft ground or in a crash they can easily become a guillotine. Sometimes they collapse and uncrimping them from your foot starts a whole new type of ordeal.

digit, I've told this before but here it is again.
I slid out in a roundabout. I know I wasn't even going 10 mph. Based on the lovely scrape on my helmet's chin bar, I wouldn't have much flesh on my jaw if I hadn't worn the helmet. Based on the damage to my scoot which took off the foot peg, I probably would've lost a good bit of skin on my thigh and hip and arm and shoulder if I hadn't worn my jacket and pants.
ANY accident at ANY speed can cause pain and injury and damage. Everyone, please don't fool yourselves that just 'cause your 50cc can't go fast, that you can't be badly hurt if you go down. That roundabout proved it. If you need, I can take a pic of my helmet's scrape. It's not as impressive as Dave's pic though. But then when you think about how hard fiberglass etc is, versus how soft your flesh is....
>'Kat, who didn't even go the five minutes/one mile to her old church without ATGATT

That's brilliant! I'm fairly certain I don't fully get the reference, but it's a new name for crotch rocket pilots I've never heard before. Where's it from? Ian

Ian H Ian Its an acronym Squid An extremely rare animal with a short lifespan. Usually a new sport bike enthusiast with the reasoning of a lunatic, whom you might see thrashing on an R1 wearing sandals, shorts, and a tee. When found lying motionless on the pavement, this creature transforms itself into a stream of blood, exposed flesh, and broken limbs. Hence the squid moniker. Stupid Quick Under dressed Imminently Dead Take care and ride safely dear friend Yours Hank
