I tried to get away from pcs and went into copiers, but people just kept bringing them to me... worked in various IT departments and at Gateway in IT and then later tech. support.

I used to build and sell them but since so many know how to make their own, and microcenter stores everywhere, its not marketable anymore

I remember the first server a school had. After many years they dug out the thing; it's the size of a computer desk; with a processing power lower than an Atom computer! 300Mhz, 256MB RAM, only thing it had was tens of network connections, which probably will also be possible on an atom computer over the USB connectors!
Really, imagine a computer desk sized PC, being beaten by a pc the size of a tablet!

Cmos battery and system battery mean nothing on a hard drives ability to retain its info . Get a USB HD or large flash drive and if its super important rent a security box at a bank to store it in

Is plugging the laptop in an option? I haven't had my battery in my laptop for over 5 years. HEAT, is the issue on mine.

I had a Commodore Vic 20! hah I was totally jealous of my friend's Commodore 64 and TRS80. I'll always remember telling my parents that this other computer had a 340 meg hard drive and there was NO WAY you could ever fill that up if you tried. Now a computer with storage 200x larger than that would be considered small.

@ wutz ok heres the deal im as stupid on computers as i am on scoots never was taught anything, just all trial and error. this is a dell laptop
so you saying as long as i take the battery out. it will 99% of the time, i wont loose anything, correct?
at least thats what i think your saying? lol Yes. Computer data is stored magnetically and does not require electricity to be maintained. You're good for 5 years minimum without power if your hard drive is healthy, dry, and cool.
