Found a 2003 Reflex...12K miles, $1800. Not bad, but not sure I like that high floor tube. (I wear boots & have big feet.) Also would have to buy a top case. nh.craigslist.org/mcy/3767373936.html Honestly, I'm not especially enthusiastic about this one. And a 2001 Helix, $2K, 5K miles. nh.craigslist.org/mcy/3743347407.html Hmm...I kinda like this one, as long as I can talk it down a couple hundred bucks (or get the dude to deliver it). Another Helix, albeit with 9800 miles, asking more money, and no top case. nh.craigslist.org/mcy/3760366701.htmlAlso saw this: 2003 Aprilia Atlantic. It's listed for $1800, described as "cosmetic damage, runs and rides". (Looks like it was dropped on the left side.) I have to say...THAT looks to be worth checking out! If all the damage is cosmetic, I think I'm all over that!

I'm not a huge Helix fan but I kinda like the second helix. I'd ride it.... and of course I'd ride the heck out of the Aprillia. Remember, the Aprillia might be a bit much as a first bike a 250 is a tad heavy for a first bike as well, but it's much more manageable and is the smallest bike that would fit your needs but the April might be better suited for your commute (~20 miles freeway commute) The April will be happy on the freeway and beg for more. The Aprillia is gonna be heavy and very fast. It has the same Engine as the Beverly 500 (Piaggio BV 500 and that piggie can do 100 plus)... The Aprillia will have a oil filter which means you won't have to service it as often, put parts are more costly. The Honda's will be happy with conventional oil, but the April will want synthetic. Just a few things to keep in mind.

Aprilia for certain. Though you can almost crawl inside the trunk of the Helix...

The engines are solid. Like you mention, everything that's built around the engine/cvt is basically what defines the brand. And BMS uses some quality materials, but other materials are sub-par.
I personally didn't really like the 260 because; It has enough power, but it's so neutral to ride it. I would have preferred a (semi) automatic / manual motorcycle, rather than a cvt.

I'm not a huge Helix fan but I kinda like the second helix. Any particular reason you prefer that over the first Helix? Yeah...I'm not sure I should get a 500cc for my first scoot...and honestly, the thought of Italian repair costs kind of scare me.

The Atlantic can be a great scooter and has a lot of nice features however in 2002/2003 they had to upgrade the fuel system and thermostat to deal with fuel getting into the crankcase so you would have to verify that this has been taken care of by calling Aprilias toll free number and having them run the VIN.
Many are Immobilizer equipped so don't use the last master key to ride the bike as if you loose or break it you will need about $2,000 to replace all the parts that need to be hard coded to match the new keys.

If you can get the Helix clone (or even better the Helix) You'll have a time tested engine design with cheap parts you can get from numerous sources. A seat like a rolling Lay-Z-Boy with "Back To The Future" looks. So what's not to like?

They are pretty much identical other then that... (didn't pay much attension to the milage)

You might be able to fold the bad guys up and stash them under the seat with that model.

The same 500cc engine as the Aprilia Atlantic was used in the Scarabeo 500GT and people get well past 60,000 miles with just routine maintenance and an occasional voltage regulator on those bikes. Police use either bike in Italy as pursuit vehicles.
