The title pretty much says it all. I am seriously eyeing two scoots. Both are 2008's. Scooter one: It's a Q-Link Commuter 250, basically a Honda Helix clone, $1900. It has ~1700 miles, will have a new battery, has a rear trunk. Has the 244cc Honda-clone engine, carb'd. Scooter two: It's an XY260 T-4, $1600. It has 1566 miles, new battery, no trunk. It has what seems to be the Yamaha (Linhai?) 257cc engine, also carb'd. I was told (here) this one has hydraulic lifters & will not need valve adjustment. (good!) Rider: 5'10", about 250lbs. Very experienced driver (1,000,000+miles) but first powered 2-wheeler. Use: around town initially, then commuting. Commute is ~20 miles highway, 4-5 surface streets.

Don't give a damn about looks...and honestly, I kind of like the Q-Link/Helix's "lost in the 80's" styling. ;D

I would shop around I got this Roketa with 1200 miles for 800 bucks last year its a 2007 model 257cc. With mods and DMV fees I am way under 1500 total into it. Some guy posted that their 3 grand 500 aprilias around... Wish I could find a deal like that. I would pick the xy260. You can buy a new roketa for 1600 bucks.

Is there a option for keep shopping?
You can find a used Helix for that same money...

Jaraxle, not sounding rude, but who ever told you the linhai has hydraulic lifters was jerking your chain. Make him pull the valve cover and prove it. It's a overhead cam just like on the other engine except the motor is horizontal instead of vertical. I own two linhais and again I got to see this.

Just an idea of what can be had. My buddy bought a used (22,000 on the clock, yeah high mileage but great bike), Piaggio BV 500 for 1500 bucks. The guy also had a reflex for the same price.. Lower miles but salvaged title, but it was spotless clean, it had been dropped on the driveway once, insurance totaled it.. hence salvage title, the affected plastics had been changed and he had pictures of the damage before repair. If you look on craigslist, especially at the end of the season, you can find some really awesome deals. Just always make sure the title is clean, in hand, and that the bike has current registration.
In California, back registration can easily be more then a bike is worth. If you have a buddy that works on bikes or scooters, have them go with you to check it out. Then get out there and practice, practice and practice some more.
Oh and he might of meant, it's liquid cooled so it doesn't need valve adjustments as often. Both of those bikes are liquid cooled.

Personally I am not a fan of the VOG body style but don't tell that to anybody please.
If you like the looks of the Helix, go with that one. I have seen a lot of people post that they got a lot of trouble free miles with the clones and the kind of riding you are talking about is great for it. THe valves are easier to adjust too.
There are a lot of people here with the Linhai motor and they too love their scooter, I just have not seen posts of them going 20 k plus miles.
Now I am sure we will see them though.

The key to all of them with some exceptions is a good PDI and good maintenance and understanding the machines capabilities IMO. The helix copy scooters have been around longer and have a good track record. The linhai is younger compared to the vertical helix clones. But it has built a good reputation and is a lot easier to get parts for now than in it's younger days. There are lots of comparisons on these two engines and one is the valves. No doubt the vertical engine is easier because of the external while the engine is running adjustment but adjusting the valves on the linhai is way overblown. Easy to adjust but in most cases not easy to get to. Also it isn't like you have to do them every other day either. With modifications to the scooter one can make it easier to do also. I can adjust the valves on my linhai in less than 30 minutes. I'm sure you'll find the scooter that you like. JR

scooter 1, based on my problems with scooter 2. Scooter 2 looks great (the BMS), but it's a complex bike, especially the fuel injected bikes. You don't have the fuel injected bike there, because it's the 2008 version.
I just think numero uno will be much more comfy, and more than likely less trouble. (that is, I don't know if it has less trouble, but I just didn't like my BMS rambling apart, with it's complex plastics, and millions of screws.
It was a pain in the 8utt-hole, to just change the coolant fluid; I never going to buy a BMS TBX again, regardless of how cool they look!

Honestly, I wasn't especially impressed with the TBX...can't put my finger on anything specific, but it just seemed...I don't know...too pretty...? The plastics seemed to fit poorly, the radiator looks vulnerable (looks to be right behind the front tire!)...it seems like it was built with style over substance. (Honestly, it looks like replacing the radiator would require taking essentially the entire front of the thing apart!) Also, while nobody will confuse them with Honda, Suzuki, or even Kymco, CF Moto does have a track record, and it seems to be a pretty good one. Also...perusing Craigslist on my phone while waiting for a beer truck to get out of a loading dock, I found this: nh.craigslist.org/mcy/3777741352.html . Honestly...other than being a different color & lacking the graphics, that looks like the TBX. Err...is TBX made by Roketa?
