Back When I first started riding my Dad really drilled this into me.
Oops that is how often do you inspect not insect
Here's mine:
Every ride:
1. Blinkers, brake lights
2. Mirrors
3. Casual tire inspection (does it look low)
4. Levers, handlebars, and throttle tight?
Every day:
1. Tires (use the gauge)
2. Nuts bolts and fasteners
3. Oil
4. Everything in Every ride
5. Quick polish
Every Week:
1. Everything in Every day
2. Tire inspection for deformity, punctures, and wear
3. Check wheels, are the weights still there check brake pads etc...
4. Wash weekly and wax monthly
5. Check all fluids
6. Inspect all engine nuts bolts and fastners (remove plastics to more thoroughly inspect nuts, bolts, and fastners)
7. Perform any scheduled maintenance
I hope we all realize how much more important all these things are on a bike than on a car as it is rare that any issues you miss on a car will kill you. Post your pre-ride inspections or add to mine if I missed anything...

here what i do a bit different
on your every day and every ride i do every ride
but i check oil , sheesh i check oil every time i stop.

I was thinking about why I don't check the oil every ride like terrilee mentions. I also check for leaks every ride. If I see anything suspicious it could prompt a oil check early...

i def check oil everytime i ride. along with make sure tires are good and brakes

My grandfather gave me some stickers from the Army from 1963 with a list of general driving procedures and checks that I affix to all my machines. Some are less applicable than others (#16 Smoke at halts only) but it reminds me to take the time to give everything a one over. Literally  seconds today can save you from consequences that could last for years. |

Thanks Rob....this is certainly a learning process for me. Treads like this are extremely valuable to me as a new rider.
I'll be going through a process of renewing my mind from the many years of habits i've formed while driving a car...Your pre-ride inspection is something I'll have to work on with diligence, because I never did that with a car

I just check my basics weekly and rregular maint.....Runs and rides so well, haven't had to work on it for almost a year now.
Although, with the weather warming up, I do have a small issue...

To be honest, if I checked it as often as I SHOULD check it, I'd probably have to stop half way to, and home from, work, as well as when I set off.
Now I'm out of the initial service period (just!) I check the lights as I get on, and a quick chance at the tyres as I get it out every morning (I'm down there unlocking the chain, I might as well).
It gets a scrub down after every shift rotation (so four days riding-360miles), which includes taking the seat bucket out and re-coating the electricals with GT85. It gets an oil change and tyre pressure check every 1000Km (my service schedule is in Km), which is about a shift rotation and a half.
I'm planning on a frame check, for rust spots (just a quick eye ball, then dremal and rust proof paint anything suspect) every couple of months or so. I gave it a once over when I had the bucket out yesterday and the frame itself looks quite good after a month of road salt and manure. The stands however.......
Probably not in line with anything official, but my mileage is so high that all the big checks are done by my mechanic at the service intervals so often, I don't bother getting stuck in any more than that.

I agree with everything, but just to add. Scooter Tires can be quite different. They can look good, feel good, but still be totally flat. You'll know instantly when you try to ride with a flat tire. It steers very tough.

Kick the tires and light the fires. Check lights, blinkers, brakes, and horn. Strap on crash pad and ride.

the only reason i check oil at every stop etc is
if it leaked while you were riding, there wont be anything underneath, ya know? |
